Being good Samaritan can, at times, come with certain risks. This is something one of the protagonists of Just a Little Harmless Sex, 1999 romantic comedy directed by Rick Rosenthal, learns at the beginning of the film. Alan (played by Robert Mailhouse) drives on the road one rainy night and, after seeing stranded woman, pulls over and gives a ride. She expresses her gratitude by offering oral sex. Before Alan has opportunity to think it over, his car is stopped by police and later he ends in jail on charges of soliciting prostitute. He is forced to call his wife Laura (played by Alison Eastwood) and ask her to bail him out. She does so, but also throws him out of their house. Few days later Alan discusses the matter with his friends Brent (played by William Ragsdale) and Danny (played by Jonathan Silverman) and tries to figure out how to rescue his marriage. In the meantime, Laura brings her two best friends Terianne (played by Jessica Lundy) and Alison (played by Kimberly Williams) to get drunk after which trio goes to a night club and tries to pick up men. When Alan returns home, he is greeted by his mother-in-law Elaine (played by Lauren Hutton), who catches the interest of his two friends.
Just a Little Harmless Sex was made in low budget semi-independent production and, as such, tried to be different from romantic comedies produced by major Hollywood studios in 1990s. General idea was to make content more adult, including discussions whether the activity popularised by Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky is actual sex or not. Another idea was to have co-written by male and female writer, in this case Marti Noxon and Roger E. Mills, who would each try to tell story from different perspective. Despite their valiant efforts, the script drowns in cliches and the answer to the question whether Alan and Laura will come back together is as easy as the answer to question whether the Pope is Catholic. Near the end Rick Rosenthal tries to spice up the film with scenes of striptease, sex in the toilet and fight involving character played by Michael Ontkean of Twin Peaks, but this just shows authors’ inability to deliver proper finale. General impression is improved a bit thanks to very good cast among which the most notable name belongs to Alison Eastwood, daughter of Clint Eastwood. She does more than decent job, but, unlike her father, shows little talent of picking right projects. Just a Little Harmless Sex is watchable film, but this isn’t enough to be recommended for more demanding audience.
