A film can be obscure despite having notable names in its cast. Reason for such obscurity is usually the same one that makes those cast members happy for the film being obscure. This is the conclusion you might get if you watch Luckytown, 2000 drama directed by Paul Nicolas (also known under alternative title Luckytown Blues).
Protagonist, played by Kirsten Dunst, is Lidda Doyles, girl who just turned 18. She decides to leave home and start looking for her father Charlie (played by James Caan), professional gambler who created legendary reputation by playing poker in Las Vegas. On her way to Vegas she takes aspiring young poker player Colonel (played by Vince Karthesier) for a ride. In the meantime, Charlie doesn’t have a clue about being sought by his daughter, because there are more pressing concerns. He is the long feud with Tony DeCarlo (played by Robert Miano), cruel and vicious strip club owner. When Lidda and Colonel arrive to Las Vegas, they would set a series of events ending in bloodbath.
Kirsten Dunst is one of the rare Hollywood child stars that successfully carried her career into adulthood. At the time she was considered major teen star with romantic comedies being her forte. She had probably thought of Luckytown as some sort of “cool” Tarantinoesque black comedy, but the film turned out quite differently. It is besides the point whether that was authors’ intention or not, but the script by Brendan Beseth is full of cliches and predictable situations and, that, together with Nicolas’ completely inept direction makes it utterly boring. Cast doesn’t seem very interested in their roles, and that includes legendary James Caan and young Vince Karthesier who can’t do much with his poorly written character. The only cast member who tries to something tangible is Luis Guzman in small role of superstitious hitman. Apparently aware that the audience won’t be attracted to the film on the account on story and characters alone, director Nicolas adds scenes featuring nudity and explicit sex. Even Kirsten Dunst’s character briefly works as a stripper, but Dunst, unlike glamorous soap opera star Jennifer Gareis, doesn’t bare her breasts in the film. This was probably a wise decision because there were definitely much better opportunities for such move.
