Clint Eastwood entered film history books as one of the greatest action stars of its time and, later, as author of serious “Oscar”-awarded dramas. In between he also tried to make his mark as star of comedies, with rather mixed results. Why such efforts ultimately failed can be seen in Pink Cadillac, 1989 action comedy directed by Buddy Van Horn.
Protagonist, played by Clint Eastwood, is Tommy Nowak is California-based bounty hunter (or “skip tracer”) who employs all kinds of ingenious tricks to locate and apprehend fugitives that skipped bail. His latest target is Lou Ann McGuinn (played by Bernardette Peters), woman who got arrested for possession of counterfeit dollar bills. When she decides to skip bail, she does so in Cadillac owned by her husband Roy McGuinn (played by Timothy Carhart). The vehicle contains large stash of money Lou Ann initially believes to be counterfeit. When Nowak locates and apprehends her, he discovers that the money was genuine and actually belonged to neo-Nazi gang Roy had been involved in while in prison. Its leader Alex (played by Michael Des Barres) sends Roy and his friend Waycross (played by John Dennis Johnston) to retrieve the money at all cost. Instead of bringing her to authorities, Nowak has to protect Lou Ann and his task is further complicated by developing romantic feelings for her.
Pink Cadillac is one of those frustrating films you want to like and which could have been very good with slightly bigger effort by everyone involved. Script by John Eskow represents promising combination of action and screwball comedy, while Eastwood on various occasion displays surprising levels of comedic talents, especially while his character uses various impersonations in his line of work. However, for that formula to work a proper director with clear talent and experience in comedy was needed. Eastwood instead chose his old friend and former stuntman Buddy Van Horn whose approach to the script was uninspired and somewhat too relaxed. As a result, Pink Cadillac is terribly overlong, many jokes fail over poor timing and even the action looks subpar, especially during final showdown taking place in gang’s camp, which makes film look cheaper than it actually is. Casting also at times leaves something to be desired. While Bernardette Peters is true comedic talent and does good job with her character, she lacks chemistry with Eastwood and romantic subplot looks rushed and unconvincing. Same goes for Timothy Carhart who looks too Hollywood-like for pathetic small time criminal. Some supporting players improve impression a little bit, like English rock musician Michael Des Barres as vicious but intelligent neo-Nazi leader or Geoffrey Lewis as on old hippie counterfeiter. That, however, isn’t enough to recommend this film to anyone but most loyal and patient of Eastwood fans.
