In 1984 sex comedy Revenge of the Nerds became a surprise hit at the box office and, like so many such surprise hits, got inevitable sequel. And, like so many such sequels, 1987 film Revenge of the Nerds: Nerds in Paradise directed by Joe Roth was inevitably significantly inferior in quality.
Plot begins one year after the events depicted in original film, during which the nerdish students of Adams College, gathered in new Lambda Lambda Lambda fraternity, triumphed over the jocks from rival Alpha Betas fraternity. Lambdas are invited to national fraternities convention that takes place in Fort Lauerdale, Florida and send delegation led by Lewis Skolnick (played by Robert Carradine). The locale offers plenty of sun, sea and sex, but Lambdas soon realise that they again have to deal with their tormentors from Alpha Betas. The leader of that fraternity Roger Latimer (played by Bradley Whitford) conspires with hotel manager “Buzz” (played by Ed Lauter) conspires to have Lambdas’ reservation cancelled, after which they are forced to book rooms in dilapidated hotel in rough part of town. Roger and his minions continue to intimidate and scheme against Lambdas, who receive help from Sunny Carstairs (played by Courtney Thorne-Smith), kind-hearted hotel trainee with whom Lewis falls in love.
With new director and new screenwriters, producers wanted to make something at least bit different, although led mostly by commercial considerations and desire to reach broader audience. For the sake of increasingly prudish PG-13 rating, nudity was removed and sexual content toned down in such way that Nerds in Paradise ceased to be sex comedy and instead opted for broader forms of humour. Although the quality of humour in first film wasn’t anything to write home about, in the second the film it was significantly lower, with most jokes relying on various bodily functions or annoying ethnic stereotypes. Most of the original cast was kept, but some like Anthony Edwards in the role of Gilbert Lowe, was uncomfortable with the new direction of the film and series and, while contractually obliged to appear, asked producers to have his presence reduced. Those few scenes when he appears are among the best in the film. The other members of cast, however, had to struggle with the script which made their characters significantly less nerdish, which is most evident in the uninspired finale during which they abandoned the intelligence and instead use brute force and violence to triumph over their enemies. Courtney Thorne-Smith, an actress that would later make successful career in television, looks good, especially in the scene where he wears bikini, but still has to struggle with underwritten one-dimensional character of obligatory romantic interest. Nerds in Paradise, while entertaining in small bits, simply doesn’t have enough humour to be recommended, even to those who like to indulge in 1980s nostalgia.
