In 1990s concept of virtual reality fascinated Hollywood film makers, leading to many films exploring that subject. The trend has affected even their European colleagues and one of the examples can be found in Rewind, 1998 Franco-Italian science fiction thriller directed by Sergio Gobbi. The main character, played by Raoul Bova, is Paul Mansart, a terrorist who eight years ago led small group of radicals during assassination of UN official. Soon afterwards the group was taken out by police with Mansart left as the only survivor. Now he is serving prison sentence when Europe again gets hit by series of spectacular terrorist acts. German investigator Joseph Valko (played by Luca Zingaretti) believes that the perpetrator might be the same one that originally hired Mansart, although Mansart keeps claiming that he is the only one responsible. Valko decides to put Mansart into experimental program which uses virtual reality to restore memories that have been suppressed into subconsciousness. Mansart is offered reduced sentence, so he reluctantly agrees and meets team of scientists led by Marianne Legrand (played by Maruschka Detmers) and Fabrice Rivali (played by Niels Arestrup). Their work is at first faced with difficulties, because Mansart’s girlfriend Alice Varyk (played by Cècile Pallas) has died in the attack, causing constant reliving of psychological trauma for Mansart. However, the mystery is slowly being revealed, but scientists soon become targets of sabotage.
Motive of political terrorism, which was in 1990s still more relevant to Europe than USA, was supposed to make Rewind more serious than Hollywood films with the subject of virtual reality. What Gobbi in his film actually delivers looks nothing more than poor man’s version of such films which weren’t particularly good and impressive even during time of their production. Much of its could be due to very low budget, that makes the scenes of virtual reality looking quite unimpressive, but bigger issue is rather uninspired script by Gobbi and Luca Biggione that employs all of the cheap Hollywood cliches. The whole plot is reduced to simple “whodunnit” which is revealed in unconvincing and unsatisfactory way. While Rewind had rather respectable cast, which included notables names like Maruschka Detmers and Niels Arestrup, as well as major Italian star Raoul Bova in main role, it ended as one of the more obscure titles of 1990s European cinema. All those unfortunate to watch it won’t have problems finding the reasons why.
