When something looks too good to be true, it usually isn’t. That hard lesson is learned by many men unfortunate enough to meet the protagonist of Scam, 1993 crime drama directed by John Flynn. The plot, based on Ladystinger, novel by Craig Smith, begins with introduction of Maggie Rohrer (played by Lorraino Bracco), an attractive woman who frequents hotel bars preying on lonely and wealthy men in search of some fun between the sheets. She does it in a manner of experienced professional and her modus operandi includes sipping drugs in her targets’ drinks and leaving their rooms with their wallets cleaned off. Maggie’s luck runs out when her next target happens to be another sort of professional who saw through her game. Jack Shanks (played by Christopher Walken) is an experienced conman who sees Maggie as an perfect asset in a complicated scheme to rob powerful man connected with organised crime. Maggie agrees and they start working together, gradually discovering that they developed feelings for each other. Maggie would, however, soon learn that Jack perhaps isn’t who he claims to be.

Although being made in television production that never looked too promising in early 1990s, Scam is nevertheless a huge disappointment. This is mostly due to talents involved behind and in front of camera. Director John Flynn had a long career that included some more than decent action films in 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. However, even more impressive were names in the cast. Lorraine Bracco was at the time at top her stardom created by her brilliant performance in Goodfellas. Her partner Christopher Walken was even larger star, always able to deliver interesting and memorable performance playing diverse set of character. In this particular case, his efforts were complete failure which could be, to a degree, attributed to the lack of chemistry with Bracco in romantic scenes. Complicated yet somewhat predictable plot is handled very poorly by Flynn who also fails to properly use Jamaican locations, which were at the time somewhat of rarity even for cable networks like Showtime. The ultimate result is overlong, boring and utterly uninteresting television film that serves as another reminder that viewers they shouldn’t expect much quality simply because some notable names are involved.

RATING: 2/10 (-)

It has a slight resemblance to Focus of will smith, by the way Christopher Walken is a master in this movie.
