The most dedicated fans probably don’t mind seeing their favourite stars appearing in unambitious low budget direct-to-video productions, but every now and then their devotion gets challenged. Fans of James Belushi and Linda Hamilton were likely to experience such ordeal while watching Separate Lives, 1995 thriller directed by David Madden.
Belushi plays Tom Beckwith, widowed police detective who quit his job in order to start new career as a psychotherapist. In order to do so, he attend classes by Dr. Lauren Porter (played by Hamilton). She approaches him to help her deal with serious problem that might require someone with detective skills. Dr. Porter has been recently having blackouts and suspects that she might suffer from multiple personality disorder. Beckwith is to follow her in order to confirm her suspicions. He does so and becomes quite concerned when he learns that Dr. Porter suffered terrible trauma in her childhood by witnessing murder of her mother. There are few more recent murders and Dr. Porter or, to be precise, her violent alter ego “Lena” might be responsible.
Written by Steven Pressfield (who would later become famous as author of bestselling historical novels), Separate Lives had not so original premise, but in right hands it could have been turned into truly intriguing psychological thriller or, at least, a trashy entertainment like Color of Night. Unfortunately, direction by David Madden is wooden, which is reflected in James Belushi delivering one of the most uninspired and forgettable performances of his careeer. Even worse things happens with Linda Hamilton, heroine of Terminator films who here tries to handle complex double role and even plays with with the idea of showing that she can be seductress in the league of Sharon Stone and Linda Fiorentino. Her efforts are compromised with terrible ending which is not only utterly predictable, but also quite unconvincing. Separate Lives, who just happened to be the last film in the career of Hollywood veteran Vera Miles, ends a complete waste of time even for fans of their two stars.
