Most Hollywood comedies based on Saturday Night Live sketches were failures and The Ladies Man, 2000 film directed by Reginald Hudlin, isn’t an exception. In it Tim Meadows (who also co-wrote the script) repeats the role he had played in TV show – Leon “Ladies Man” Phelps, radio DJ whose clothes, hairstyle and manner remained stuck in 1970s. Leon has specialised on giving dubious romantic advice on the airwaves, while also trying to seduce various women himself. Leon has some success in it and lives to its name, but some of his on-air antics get him fired. Leon now has the time to search for mysterious woman from his romantic past. In the meantime, group of men whose wives and girlfriends have cheated them with Leon wants to track him down and exact revenge.
The Ladies Man flopped at the box office and was greeted quite poorly by the critics. Anyone who bothers to watch this film might soon find the reasons why. The most obvious is common to many Saturday Night Live adaptations – what works well as short comedy sketch usually can’t work as feature film. As a result, The Ladies Man is funny only at the very beginning, when the audience is introduced to bizarre and outrageous character. But when this character is supposed to be part of some plot, scriptwriters appear to lose all inspiration. Instead of outrageous humour audience is served the worst possible romantic comedy cliches. Even such gifted comedians like Will Farrell can’t rescue The Ladies Man from sinking into well-deserved obscurity.
