Ireland and America, due to centuries of emigration, have long, rich and complex relationships. Some of its aspects are explored in The Nephew, 1998 Irish drama written and directed by Eugene Brady. The plot is set on Inisharag, an island near Irish coast where Tony Egan (played by Donal McCann) lives alone on his farm. Twenty years earlier his sister Karen has left the island for New York and never contacted her family. Much to his surprise, Tony receives Karen’s letter in which she tells that she is dying of cancer and wants him to take care of her 17-year old son. When young Chad (played by Hill Harper) arrives to island, local population is surprised that he is black. Chad doesn’t think much of his race and soon begins to win hearts and minds of locals. That includes Aislin Brady (played by Aislin McCann), a girl with whom he starts romantic relationship. That doesn’t sit well with Aislin’s father Joe (played by Pierce Brosnan), local innkeper who has long-lasting feud with Chad’s uncle.
At the time of production Irish actor Pierce Brosnan has, thanks to his role of James Bond, enjoyed reputation of one of the greatest Hollywood stars. Trying to advance the cinema of his native country, Brosnan has, together with friend Beau St. Clair, founded production company called Irish Dreamtime. The Nephew was the studio’s first production and it serves both as serious drama and some sort of film postcard of Ireland. Director Brady finds the proper balance between two, despite he and his co-writers Jacqueline O’Neill and Sean P. Steele filling the film with characters and situations more suitable for depressive dramas by Ken Loach and Mike Leigh than light-hearted film at the edge of comedy. The Nephew benefits a lot from strong cast that includes not only Brosnan, but experienced character actors like Donal McCann and Sinead Cusack. Harper Hill, who would few years later become star playing Dr. Sheldon Hawkes in CSI: NY, is very good in the role of young biracial man who easily fight small town prejudices. The Nephew, like so many such films, begins to sink into extensive sentimentality near the end, which is quite predictable. Despite that, the film represents a solid production and display of talents that could be recommended for not too demanding audience.
