In 1990 Gary Marshall succeeded in turning Pretty Woman, film originally devised as serious drama about street prostitution, into one of the most popular romantic comedies of its time. Nine years later he tried the same in The Other Sister, film dealing with even less appealing subject of mental retardation.
Protagonist, played by Juliette Lewis, is Carla Tate, 18-year old woman who spent ten years in school for pupils with special needs. She returns to the home of her rich San Francisco parents – Elizabeth (played by Diane Keaton) and Ridley Tate (played by Tom Skerritt). Her mother is convinced that the parents’ home is the place where Carla could be protected from the challenges of the outside world. Carla, however, thinks different – she is convinced that she could finish “normal” school and her parents, thanks to somewhat less sceptical father, grant her wish. Some time later Carla also insists on living independently, so parents allow her to rent an apartment. In polytechnic school she finds Daniel McMahon (played by Giovanni Ribisi), charming young man who is, like her, mentally challenged. Two of them start romantic relationship that would infuriate Carla’s mother.
Gary Marshall has built his career on films that can be best described as “syrupy”. The Other Sister, which can be viewed as some sort of variation on Rain Man, doesn’t stray away from Marshall’s formula – a little of romance, a little of social barrier dividing the protagonists, a lot of saccharine and obligatory happy ending. The Other Sister is saved from hyperglicemia only through the work of dedicated cast. Juliette Lewis, Hollywood actress who had one of the most promising career in early 1990s, returns to big screen in a role of slightly retarded woman, both similar and different from the role she played in Kalifornia. Her partner Giovanni Ribisi also had remarkable performance by playing retarded, but also very diferent, character in “D.P.O.”, one of episodes of The X-Files. Efforts of those two actors are helped by supporting players like Diane Keaton, Tom Skerritt and Hector Elizondo. While overlong and predictable, The Other Sister nevertheless can entertain the audience and brighten their mood.
