One of the most overused tropes of hard boiled detective fiction is slightly altered in The Right Temptation, 2000 thriller directed by Lyndon Chubbuck. Protagonist is Derian McCall (played by Rebecca De Mornay), policewoman who, after botched raid, leaves the service in order to start career of private investigator. One day her office is visited by Anthea Ferrow-Smith (played by Dana Delany), wife of construction tycoon Michael Ferrow-Smith (played by Kiefer Sutherland). Derian is asked to discreetly inquire about potential infidelity of Anthea’s husband. When her investigation shows that Michael is faithful, Anthea demands that Derian goes a little bit further and, being an attractive woman, try to seduce him. Derian agrees and actually falls in love with Michael. After a while, she begins to regret that romantic adventure and just when she thinks she got away from it all, receives call from panicked Anthea.
Swapping of genders is the only thing that makes The Right Temptation different of most of “detective falls for the wrong girl” stories and this makes the film stand out among low budget neo-noir thrillers that dominated the video store shelves in 1990s and early 2000s. While the plot doesn’t reinvent the wheel or adds anything new or particularly interesting, the film can, at least to some measure, rely on a good cast. Rebecca De Mornay is good in thankless role of female private detective while Dana Delany puts her looks to good use. But the most pleasant surprise is Kiefer Sutheland, an actor who too many times played psychopaths and villains and here tries his hand as romantic hero. On the other hand this isn’t enough to improve impression too much, especially when the audience has to deal with convolutions of the plot and the ending, which requires characters to be unfamiliar with most basic and well-known forensic techniques. Although more than watchable and, at times, entertaining, The Right Temptation can be best recommended to the fans of its cast.
