Creators of a long-lasting film cycle often experience difficulties in maintaining the regular cast. In case of Lemon Popsicle, popular series of Israeli sex comedies, it happened with the sixth instalment. Jonathan Sagall, an actor who had played regular character of Momo (“Bobby” in English version), wanted to do more serious work and clashed with producers. So, Up Your Anchor, 1985 film directed by Dan Wolman, was made without him. Absence of the character is quickly addressed in the plot with a letter sent to his friends from New York. Remaining two friends – Bentzi/Benji (played by Yftach Katzur) and Yudale/Huey (played by Zachi Noy) – remain in Israel until both, each for their own reasons, decide to join the crew of a passenger ship cruising the Mediterranean. Bentzi has fallen madly in love in Dora/Sherry (played by Petra Kogelnik), beautiful girl whose father happens to be ship’s captain (played by Yehuda Efroni). Yudale went to bed with an obese girl whom he doesn’t want to marry after being caught by her father Georgiyan (played by Joseph Shiloach), so he joins the crew, not knowing that his future father-in-law happens to be one of the officers. Their misadventures are further complicated with duo of criminals trying to use Georgiyan for their diamond smuggling schemes.

Up Your Anchor is a clear example of a film series that ran out of steam. Katzur and Noy have aged and have trouble playing teenagers, while their juvenile pranks and behaviour looks increasingly tiresome. Quality is humour is quite poor and often the creators are forced to recycle or slightly modify jokes and gags from previous instalments. Like in other instalments, lame jokes are paired with large amount of scenes featuring sex and nudity, but, those scenes, while pleasing to target audience of teenage males, aren’t something that haven’t been seen before. Even with that, producers quickly exhaust their creative resources and must compensate it with rather pathetic tricks. One of them is extensive scene during which Bentzi and Yudale with their prospective dates watch what is supposed to be “home films”. What they are actually watching is the scene directly taken from the first film featuring legendary nymphomanic Stella. Having most of the plot set on a cruise ship and, later, in Venice, helps a film a bit with changing scenery, but this is definitely not enough to stop Up Your Anchor from turning into major waste of time.
