Some direct-to-video sequels of successful cinema releases are better than others. That thing can be said of Vampires: Los Muertos , 2002 action horror film written and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace which was sequel of John Carpenter’s Vampires. Like so many direct-to video sequels, Los Muertos has very weak link to the original which is reduced to few passing remarks about its characters. The new protagonist, played by Jon Bon Jovi, is Derek Bliss, man who earns his living as professional vampire hunter and prefers to do his business alone. However, when he is hired to conduct a particularly difficult task, he becomes aware that he would gather the team of fellow vampire hunters. Unfortunately, the team Bliss wanted to gather has been wiped out so Bliss has to use amateurs instead – Father Rodrigo (played by Christian de la Fuente), a Catholic priest; Zoey (played by Natasha Gregson Wagner), girl bitten by a vampire who tries to stave off the turning with experimental drugs; and Sancho (played by Diego Luna), Mexican youth who aspires to become vampire hunter. The only professional, apart from Bliss, is his old friend Dan Collins (played by Darius McCrary). When they come to Mexico, it turns out that the task is much harder than they anticipated, because they have to deal with hordes of vicious vampires led by Una (played by Arly Jover).

While making the sequel, Carpenter limited his role to executive producer, leaving the script and direction to long time collaborator Tommy Lee Wallace who, much to his credit, did more than solid job. Despite low budget and not particularly original plot, Los Muertos is hardly disappointing film. That can be explained with clever use of Mexican locations, as well as very diverse cast which includes rock musician Jon Bon Jovi in one of his rare leading roles and Mexican star Diego Luna who was just beginning his international career. The best impression was left by Arly Jover, Spanish actress who previously appeared in the role of vampire in Blade, and who here plays the role of evil seductive woman with gusto. Wallace also added number of interesting twists in the plot that make Los Muertos into entertaining and mostly satisfying experience to viewers with low expectations.
