Like many modern-day revisionists films about vampirism, Night Hunter, 1995 action horror directed by Rick Jacobson, must make us forget everything we have learned about that particular phenomenon. First, instead of being killed, vampires are only slightly annoyed while being exposed to sunlight; second, vampires can breed only during solar eclipse; third, instead of using wooden stakes, the only way to kill vampires is to break their spine. Because of that the only efficient vampire hunters are those of great strength or great martial arts skills. Jack Cutter (played by Don "The Dragon" Wilson), the last in the long line of vampire hunters, has such skills and he is quite determined to use them in order to avenge the parents who were butchered while he was a child. After many years he tracks his parents' murderers in Los Angeles restaurant and gets his revenge. The massacre would bring attention of vampire king Bruno Fischer (played by Nicholas Guest) and news reporter Raimy Baker (played by Melanie Smith).
Plot of Night Hunter, despite drowning in cliches, had at least some potential – it could have been used for a parody. Unfortunately, Jacobson, scriptwriter William C. Martell and producer Ashok Amritraj took the easier, more conventional and expectedly disastrous route. The plot and characters are series of cliches and the movie doesn't even try to hide its low budget and even lower levels of creativity among film makers. Even the stuff that was supposed to be main attraction - display of Wilson's martial skills - is ruined by Jacobson's direction that made every action scene completely confusing. Probably the best description of Night Hunter could be found in one of its scenes – while asked by reporter to show his face, Wilson's character hesitates. Since he was behind camera as executive producer of Night Hunter, Wilson had good reason to repeat this scene in real life.
