Many films are remembered for wrong reasons. Nine Months, 1995 comedy written and directed by Chris Columbus, is one of the best known examples. For generations of future viewers it would forever be associated with the lewd conduct and subsequent arrest of its main actor Hugh Grant.
The film is actually a remake of French 1994 comedy Neuf mois. The plot is set in San Franscisco where Samuel Faulkner (played by Grant), the protagonist, has successful career of child psychiatrist. Samuel, on the other hand, doesn't like children in his personal life and this becomes a problem when his girlfriend Rebecca Taylor (played by Julianne Moore) announces her pregnancy. Samuel tries to adapt to the new situation by seeking advice from his friends who had taken opposite views on the issue of parenthood vs. childfree lifestyle. As months go by, many practical and emotional problems put Samuel's relationship with Rebecca to the test.
If not for the aforementioned incident, Nine Months would have been forgotten by now. That doesn't mean that the film is bad. On the contrary, Chris Columbus, one of Hollywood's most successful family-oriented film makers, has adapted French original with lot of skill. San Francisco locations look fine and Anglo-American cast (Grant, Moore, Tom Arnold, Jeff Goldblum) is more than capable. In some segments Columbus' version is even better than French original, especially in the hilarious scene when Samuel and his friend battle man in dinosaur costume. Robin Williams on the other hand, is trying too hard to make his character of former Soviet doctor funny, not always with the best of results. Although tad overlong and although the ending has the usual Hollywood flavour of sentimentalpredictability, Nine Months represents mostly pleasant experience for all those who happen to watch it.
