It is incredible how little creative effort is necessary for films to overcome cliches and look different from each other. This applies to small independent films as much as it applies to Hollywood blockbuster. The Maker, 1997 drama directed by Tim Hunter, is an example that belongs to the former category.
Film's protagonist is Josh (played by Jonathan Rhys-Myers), a youth who spends his 18th birthday by sniffing glue and engaging in petty meaningless thefts with his friends. Bella (played by Fairuza Balk), the only female member of his crew, is a lesbian so Josh directs his romantic attention towards Emily Peck (played by Mary Louise Parker), who just happens to work as police officer. Despite seemingly irresponsible lifestyle, Josh has enough good grades to go to college. Before that happens, a sudden event would shatter the peace in Josh's foster parents' home - arrival of Walter (played by Matthew Modine), Josh's ten year older brother. Walter tells everyone that he is businessman, but Josh gradually learns that Walter's business is illegal and that his older brother wants him to take part in important crime enterprise. Josh agrees before he would develop something of a conscience.
The Maker is in its essence a variation of the formula used by Tarantino in his classic films - couple of small-time criminals involved in caper gone bad. Rand Ravich's script alters this formula by starting the film as a serious teenage angst drama and adding unusual romantic subplot. Predictably violent ending, however, belongs to familiar Tarantino territory. General impression of this film is rescued with brilliant acting - Jonathan Rhys-Myers is very convincing in the role of confused American teenager; Mary Louise Parker is equally convincing as female policeman while Michael Madsen provides refreshing portrayal of the coked-up mobster. Matthew Modine, on the other hand, isn't particularly convincing as small-time gangster, but that won't prevent Tarantino fans and general audience from enjoying in this charming little piece of genre cinema.
