People should be more careful when choosing where to spend their vacations and generally avoid places notorious for mysterious disappearances and similar kind of events. That is conclusion viewers might get if they watch The Triangle, 2001 television thriller directed by Lewis Teague. Three friends – Stu Sheridan (played by Luke Perry), Tommy Devane (played by Dan Cortese) and Gus Gruber (played by David Hewlett) – decide, together with Stu’s girlfriend Julia (played by Polly Shannon), to spend a holiday at Bermudas. Stu suggest that they should take a pleasure cruise and they charter a boat run by Louis Morgan (played by Dorian Harewood) and his attractive assistant Charlotte “Charlie” Duval (played by Olivia d’Abo). Stu begins to regret this decision when he starts having nightmares about murder that occurred more than half a century ago. When it turns that the same nightmares plague Charlie, it is too late – their boat suddenly loses radio contact with mainland and instead stumbles into Queen of the Scots, luxurious passenger ship which has disappeared in Bermuda Triangle in 1939. There isn’t any living soul on the ship and Stu sees it as an opportunity to quickly get rich by visiting ship’s safe. Unfortunately, it turns that the ship is plagued by dark forces that would make Stu and his friends fight for their lives.
This script by Brian Howenstein and Ted Humphrey appears to have had somewhat unusual inspiration – “The Triangle”, somewhat unusual The X-Files episode which had been inspired by Titanic. Other sources of inspiration can be found in older, classic films like The Shining and The Deep. But all that had little effect other than make older and more perceptive viewers to make comparisons that would be devastating to The Triangle. The same script uses completely dislikable characters as protagonists and show that their authors lack some basic historical knowledge, like, for example, when exactly Second World War started. Cheap special effects make The Triangle even worse, especially near the end. Some male viewers might appreciate fan service in form of provocatively dressed Olivia d’Abo, but even they would probably conclude that this isn’t the reason enough to spend hour and half on this film.
