PANHANDLE: a fun investigation TV show

Review by @duvinca · 1094d · of Panhandle

Hello friends!

Well, this weekend I accidentally discovered a not very well-known TV show, unexpectedly. Looking for something to watch, it appeared and it was a season (as far as I know) and not very long, so out of curiosity I decided to watch it.

It's called Panhandle and I don't really know what platform you can find it on, I saw it on the channels I have, on Calle13 channel (in Spain).

What caught my attention as soon as I started is that the main actor was known to me, I had seen him elsewhere, the actor Luke Kirby also appeared in another very interesting and ironic role in "The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel" (I also did a review a while ago here on Hive about this wonderful TV show) and his role as a frustrated and temporarily successful comedian was impeccable. Now he does it just as well.

In this new TV show he plays a rich character but tormented by the murder of his wife 5 years ago, years in which, pill-drugged and alcoholized, he has locked himself in his mansion without wanting to go out into the world. But since then he has dedicated himself to investigating crimes as a hobby, until one day he finds a body in the garden of his house.

That leads him to meet the traffic officer of that town in Florida, the only one available besides the sheriff and who begins to investigate the case, which leads them both to get to know each other better and the protagonist Bell Preston to leave home again, to purge their tragedies and traumas to investigate not only that case but it will lead them to investigate the businesses of his in-laws and in the end also the death of his wife, everything is tied together.

On the other hand, the actress Tiana Okoye also plays a good role, a single mother who seems to be fleeing from her past, hiding something that her research partner is trying to understand. Thus both, like a team that ends up understanding and needing each other, go far, risking to know the truth of everything. Although between them...

And there is more, there are more very charismatic and funny characters, like his mother or almost a delivery friend who brought her all the packages that he requested in his own confinement.

Everything then becomes a hilarious investigation, there is suspense but also comedy, between good performances and a simple but curious story.

Personally what I like the most is the main actor and how he interprets his personal drama in a funny way, seeing that he has to leave his dead wife in the past and move on. And it seems that when everything is almost resolved, other aspects of the past and another related murder leave us in suspense again between moments of laughter, but they leave us like that...

It ends with another mystery, another piece of information that they must find out but we don't know more, the cliffhanger is tremendous!

Let's hope they make another season because I don't like to be left without knowing that unfinished part but there is no more information. In any case, I discovered that I really liked the main actor again in this surprising and histrionic TV show and that it made me laugh while the suspense gave me more and more interest.

This TV show about comic suspense is fresh, light, but with good and colorful touches in a peculiar Florida.

I don't think it has anything to do with it, but while I was reading your review I thought a lot about a TV show that was cancelled a long time ago, Pushing Daisies, which was about solving crimes with a touch of humor. That one was a lot of fiction but I loved it. This one, according to what you're saying, is promising, so I'm going to look for it one weekend when I have some free time. :D
