Hello friends!
During the last weeks I have taken the opportunity to see some more series, the holidays have been long and now in winter I feel like more. And to change things a bit, I wanted series that could be called "comfort series" so that a category appears on a platform like Filmin. And they are simply simple, nice and pleasant series, without many more great pretensions.
Because sometimes we just want to have a good time, calm and endearing on the sofa. It's simple, and we want to forget for a while about bad news or moments, unpleasant images, recurring scripts or repeated futuristic dystopias, which are boring, for that we have reality now.
And about all this I already made some comments in my previous review, also about a comfort series: There is nice content to watch: "All Creatures Great and Small"
Well now I've watched another British series named "The Larkins" (2021), maybe they're good at telling everyday stories from the English countryside with a touch of humor and innocence. It seems so.
The Larkins
This series is heartwarming, endearing and familiar, because it deals with a family in an English town in the 50s. And it is a peculiar family, firstly because there are many children and because the parents are different, somewhat chaotic, funny but at the same time good people, generous and loving.
Thus, in a farm full of animals and in a house where it always seems that there is a banquet, there is always food around, the plots develop. But there are two things that stand out:
- On the one hand, this series is a new version of an older 1990s version The Darling Buds of May (1991) and has been based on the classic novel "The Darling Buds of May" by H.E. Bates.
I didn't know this or the other previous series, but looking at information, it seems this series has received a lot of criticism, because it's not as good as the previous one. I don't know, I guess the British have another point of view as they know about the novel and some of them watched the older version. But I like this one without comparing with the rest.

- But there is also something curious in this series or at least it has caught my attention. We could say that this family is somehow "anti-system", because they are not legally/religiously married nor are their funny and smart children baptized, at that time, they did not need it to love each other more than other bitter and envious couples in town do.
It also turns out that they don't pay taxes, in fact the first of the two seasons is about that, a tax inspector who goes to investigate them but ends up [SPOILER-->] "turned on" by the hospitality of the welcoming family and ends up falling in love...
Some might criticize that, starting with other inhabitants of the town, because it is true that they have money, a big house, animals, and with the intention of buying another, etc. But what is seen is that much of the money is invested in the town itself, and in helping others, for example, [SPOILER-->] in paying the train tickets for all the inhabitants so that the train is used more to avoid that the local train stop and the service is not withdrawn or cancelled.
That happy and colorful family are always involved with the community and the people who live there and they also prepare the best parties, with free food and more great moments for everyone.
My random thoughts
It makes you think, because some part of the wealth should go precisely as they do in helping others and in helping their community, with generosity and good will. Because the father seems almost a leader and the good people realize it and also love all of that enthusiastic family. It should be like this, and not that so much money that comes from personal effort ends up in the pockets of corrupt people who do not make any effort but to steal, and in the end the true needs of the people are neglected. And unfortunately it is like this from always, from this system itself exists.
Perhaps this invites reflection, to think about an evolution not only personal but also of community, altruism and real generosity, in the place where you live. A patent improvement that would make people's lives better and a big needed change of system, a paradigm shift from one that is rotten to one that sounds perhaps still too idealistic and too positive, like this delightful series itself.
