This movie is a masterpiece when it comes to outlining persistence in love, memories , and regrets. It was directed by Michael Gordry and written by Charles Kaufman. The movie blends scifi, psychology, and romance. The movie leaves you with thought-provoking questions about love and memory, wondering if we are defined by our memories, or are doomed to make the same mistake if we forget our past mistakes.
The story follows Joel, a quiet, introverted man who discovered that his free spirited and impulsive ex girlfriend Clementine had undergone an experimental medical procedure to erase every of his memories in her head. When he learned of it, feeling betrayed and devastated, he decided to undergo same procedure to erase every of his memories about her. But when the technician map and mismantled his memory in reverse chronological order, starting from his bittered past to moments of happiness, Joel experienced a change of heart, Trapped inside his own collapsing subconscious, he desperately tries to hide Clementine in corners of his mind where the procedure can't reach them.

The central message of the movie is that one can not selectively edit out a heartbreak of a relationship without stripping out the profound joyful moments that came with it. By skipping the pain, it only meant Joel and Clementine would also lose out in the beautiful moment they shared. Despite wiping their memories, Joel and Clementine are instinctively drawn to each other at a train station. Showing that certain connection transcend memory a logic.
The movie however, succeed because of the inspiring casting and the chemistry between Joel and Clementine. Joel delivered a profoundly vulnerable, understated dramatic performance. Joel's quiet melancholy, insecurity, and desperate yearning to hold onto fading warmth anchor the film's emotional weight while Clementine is vibrant , erratic and impulsive and independent which was defined by changing of her hair color,mirroring her emotional state.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is brilliant because it refuses to romanticize love as an easy fairy tale. It acknowledges that relationships are difficult, fragile, and often painful, but argues that the risk is entirely worth it. It is endlessly rewatchable, emotionally devastating, and fiercely original.
