Movie Review: Sinners

Review by @dwixer 🏆#87 🔥1 🎵38 🎬30 📺8 📚2 · 9h · of Sinners · 5 views

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

The movie is directed and written by Ryan Coogler. The movie is a blend of historical drama and vampire mythology. The movie is set in 1932; twin brothers Stack and Smoke returned to their hometown after stints in World War 1. They returned armed with cash and bought an old sawmill to establish a joint, gathering a community of musicians, old flames, and locals. But as night falls, the occasion is troubled by bloodthirsty vampires led by Remmicks when Sammie's legendary voice echoes into the dark night. An event meant to make some cash turned out to be a brutal fight for survival until sunrise.

Here are key highlights from the movie

Michael Jordan played both characters (Stack and Smoke) and anchored it with distinct performances, switching between characters effortlessly. That was a great performance in both roles. It was in this movie that I started to admire his acting. Sammie, the preacher's son, delivered the emotional core of the movie, torn between religion and secular blues as he tried hard to find his place.

The soundtrack weaves seamlessly into the storytelling, and the riffing of the guitar as the horror escalates adds a special layer to the movie. Aside from the action, soundtracks play an important role in conveying a message, and this one surely did.

The cons in this movie center on the sudden shift from rich drama into gory horror, making it feel jarring. In the first half of the movie, I assumed it to be a rich, deliberate slice-of-life drama, only to realize the entire second half had switched into horror, making the movie less interesting. Also, the character development was slightly underdeveloped, probably due to the sheer volume of themes and character subplots.

More detail

The movie showed the transcendent power of music, how music can serve as a spiritual bridge connecting generations across time and space. Sammie's dad, being a pastor, was against his son singing secular blues. This movie showed through Sammie and his dad how faith and music shape resilience in oppressed communities.

The movie has a few lessons to learn but focuses more on the power of music and its impact. One can't tell if it is a myth, but we surely know music is a force of its own.

A movie with an interesting plot—a blend of horror and music; what a combination. I think I’ve heard or seen something about this film; it’s one worth checking out.

My opinion on this movie is also somewhat unpopular 😅 I honestly think it's overrated. Is it innovative? Of course! Is MJ's performance outstanding? Nothing special to me. The music fascinated everyone; but what I liked most was the character's performance of Jack O'Connell

Michael Jordan is no doubt a good performer. Despite its flaws (some) this movie is not a complete waste of time. t has its own charm in a different way and you did justice in what you write about it in your review.
