Review
Directed by Stephen Sommers, best known for The Mummy (1999), Van Helsing was released in 2004 and stars Hugh Jackman as the monster hunter and Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious.
The core concept was to bring together Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and Mr. Hyde in a single film, alongside Van Helsing as a secret Vatican agent. The result was one of the most critically panned movies of its time, yet also one beloved by audiences who, twenty years later, still remember it fondly.
Van Helsing holds a 24% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 35/100 on Metacritic, figures that place it among the decade's lowest-rated blockbusters. Some articles described it as “a poorly written, over-directed, and over-produced film.” The most frequent complaints centered on the overuse of CGI effects, which had aged poorly even by 2004 standards, a script overloaded with exposition, and a disjointed narrative.
Universal had actually set plans in motion for a sequel and a television series prior to the premiere, convinced it would be a phenomenon, but these were immediately scrapped.
However, the film found an audience that critics had completely overlooked. It remains a frequent point of reference on websites, in online communities, and among film fan circles. Some users have described it as “a love letter to classic Universal monsters” while also calling it an “incredibly hated film that suffers from the classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Commercially, with a budget of $160 million, it grossed approximately $300 million worldwide,a figure that, while profitable, fell short of Universal’s expectations.
2004 vs. 2026
Twenty years later, the film has found an unexpected second life: in October 2026, it cracked the Top 10 most-watched movies on Prime Video in the United States, outperforming much more recent releases. Streaming has rescued what the 2004 box office failed to capitalize on.
Personal opinion and assessment
In my opinion, Van Helsing is quite good—albeit a tad overloaded with dialogue and digital effects, but mostly good. Hugh Jackman is charismatic, Kate Beckinsale has great screen presence, and the gothic setting gives it a special charm. Critics underrated it, tearing into its CGI and script, but it isn't fair to dismiss it as a disaster. For anyone looking for action, classic monsters, and uncomplicated fun, it remains an enjoyable movie. Plus, as many users say, Van Helsing features THE BEST WEREWOLF IN CINEMA HISTORY.
