Hola amigos || Hello friends
A few days ago, whilst talking about those films that sparked our love of cinema, Pan’s Labyrinth came up one of the films that made a big impression on me as a teenager. Even though it isn’t a horror or science fiction film, I should point out that I personally really liked it. I think it’s a well-told story with incredible depth. Although it really tells two stories: the Spanish Civil War, with its good and bad characters, and the other, the fantastical journey of a young girl who has had to live through one of the worst periods in Spanish history the post-war era. And whilst it may sound like Alice in Wonderland to you, you haven’t the faintest idea just how profound this film is.
Pan’s Labyrinth is a clear example of the work of an ambitious director the sort you rarely come across these days. I’d say that the main protagonist here was Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy world, or rather his universe. The director created fairies, fauns, enormous toads and the classic creature with eyes on its hands. Don’t lie to me if you’ve seen this film, I’m sure you’ve joked more than once about that creature’s performance with its eyes on its hands. And just like that creature, there were scenes displaying such narrative brilliance that they will undoubtedly remain etched in the memories of many of us who have already enjoyed this great work by the Mexican director Guillermo del Toro.
But I’m here to talk specifically about the war and the cruelty involved in it, as any war is cruel, and I don’t think there’s any need to even mention that. I’m here to speak from the other perspective that of the little girl and the rest of the film’s characters and the reason is simple: each of the performances is sublime, thanks in part to the director’s excellent approach. Knowing how to bring each character to life is no easy task, and whilst it may seem that the actor puts in the greatest effort, we mustn’t overlook the creativity and ingenuity that the director must possess. One of the roles that impressed me most, apart from that of the girl, was that of the troop captain: a bloodthirsty and cruel soldier played by the actor Sergi López. There were certain moments when the actor displayed his most beastly side so convincingly that it is impossible not to hate him throughout the entire film.
Another of the most memorable performances, of course, was that of the little girl played by Ivana Baquero another brilliant performance in the film. Both actors ensured the film had that ebb and flow which, just like in a song, is vital in any production as it keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat, wondering how it will all end. I’ll conclude my review by saying once again that Pan’s Labyrinth is a true marvel, and you really mustn’t miss this magical labyrinth.
I imagine many of you have already seen it, whilst plenty of others certainly haven’t. And that’s exactly what I’m here to do: invite those who haven’t seen it to enjoy yet another cinema classic. And well, as always, this is just my opinion. I invite you to share yours.
