Review: Life is Beautiful (Movie)
Life is Beautiful is a 1997 drama film written, directed by and starring Italian actor Roberto Benigni, whose main objective is to show us the reality of life during the Second World War when Jews were sent to Nazi concentration camps.
Life is beautiful is based on the real life experience of Rubino Salmoni, a Jewish Holocaust survivor and Benigni's own father who was imprisoned for two years in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II.
The film begins narrating the steps of the Italian Guido Orefice, a cheerful and funny boy of Jewish origin who is employed by his uncle as a waiter in a hotel. At his workplace Guido meets Dora, a beautiful teacher with whom he falls in love and whom he tries to conquer with his words and actions.
During this part of the film the political changes begin to show. In the hotel where the main character works, the engagement of his beloved Dora, who is not really in love with her fiancé, who turns out to be a Nazi official, is being celebrated. Guido bursts into the celebration and declares his love to Dora who accepts his feelings and then leaves the party together.
From that moment on, the story moves forward 6 years and we see Guido and Dora married with a son named Giosue. During the boy's 5th birthday, guards come looking for Guido and his uncle to take them prisoner to a concentration camp just because they are Jewish.
Dora, despite not being of Jewish origin, demands to be taken with the intention of keeping her family together, but when she arrives at the camp, the men and women are separated, and after that it is not easy to continue seeing each other, because although Guido tries to keep his son away from all the atrocities that take place in the camps, we observe them.
Our protagonist tries in every possible way to keep his son alive by telling him that it's all a game and that he has to stay hidden, behave well and not cry in order to win the grand prize; while in the gas chambers, old people, children and people who couldn't work were dying.
If I'm honest, I got to know this film through a book by the writer Blue Jeans, because its main character was a fan of Benigni and Guido's phrase: Good morning Princess!
There is a scene that brought a little smile to my face and it is when Guido gets a microphone and through the loudspeaker we hear words addressed to his wife who is in another part of the camp doing forced labor. Dora smiles when she hears it and I jump up and down with happiness.
"Good morning, princess! I've been dreaming about you all night! We were going to the movies and you were wearing that pink dress that I like so much. I'm only thinking of you, princess! Always in you!"
From there I became interested in looking for the film and started watching it not knowing that it was going to break my heart.
Guido was a character I really empathized with, the love for his son and his wife felt so real, as well as his effort to protect Giosué by always showing up with a smile on his face even when he was very tired, sore or hungry. I found Gosueh's innocence very tender and I liked that his father did his best to keep his son away from the terrible events in the concentration camp.
The ending was something that shocked me and made me shed some tears, as I thought it would have a different outcome, still I'm glad I had the opportunity to see this wonderful work. It is a film that I would recommend watching as it is full of many feelings and truths.

Reseña: La Vida es Bella (Película)
La vida es bella es una película dramática de 1997, escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por el italiano Roberto Benigni cuyo objetivo principal es mostrarnos la realidad que se vivía en época de la segunda guerra mundial donde enviaban judíos a campos de concentración nazi.
La vida es bella está basada en la experiencia real de Rubino Salmoni un judío que sobrevivió al holocausto, y del mismo padre de Benigni quién fue prisionero por dos años en un campo de concentración nazi durante la segunda guerra mundial.
La película empieza narrando los pasos del italiano Guido Orefice, un alegre y divertido chico de origen judío a quién su tío le emplea como camarero en un hotel. En su sitio de trabajo Guido conoce a Dora una hermosa profesora de la que se enamora y que con sus palabras y acciones intenta conquistar.
Durante ésta parte de la película se comienzan a notar los cambios políticos. En el hotel dónde trabaja el protagonista se festeja el compromiso de su amada Dora quién no está realmente enamorada de su prometido que resulta ser un funcionario nazi. Guido irrumpe la celebración y declara su amor a Dora quién acepta sus sentimientos para luego irse juntos de la fiesta.
A partir de ese momento la historia avanza 6 años y vemos a Guido y a Dora casados y con un hijo llamado Giosue. Durante el cumpleaños número 5 del niño, guardias van en busca de Guido y su tío para llevarlos prisioneros a un campo de concentración sólo porque son judíos.
Dora a pesar de no ser de origen judío exige ser llevada también con la intención de mantener unida a su familia, sin embargo al llegar al campo separan a los hombres de las mujeres.Luego de eso no resulta fácil seguirse viendo pues aunque Guido intenta mantener a su hijo ajeno a todas las atrocidades que se viven en los campos, nosotros si las observamos.
Nuestro protagonista intenta de todas las formas posibles mantener vivo a su hijo diciéndole que todo es un juego y que tiene que estar escondido, portarse bien y no llorar para poder ganar el gran premio; mientras que en las cámaras de gas, ancianos, niños y personas que no podían trabajar estaban muriendo.
Si soy sincera ésta película la conocí por un libro del escritor Blue Jeans, pues su protagonista era fan de Benigni y de la frase de Guido: ¡Buenos días Princesa!
Existe una escena que sacó una pequeña sonrisa y es cuando Guido se hace de un micrófono y por altavoz se escuchan palabras dirigidas a su esposa quién está en otra parte del campo realizando trabajos forzados. Dora al escucharlo sonríe y yo di un saltito de felicidad.
“¡Buenos días, princesa! ¡he soñado toda la noche contigo! Íbamos al cine y tu llevabas ese vestido rosa que me gusta tanto. ¡Sólo pienso en ti, princesa! ¡Siempre en ti!”
De allí me interesé por buscar la película y empecé a verla sin saber que iba a romper mi corazón.
Guido fue un personaje con el que empatice mucho, el amor por su hijo y su esposa se sentía tan real, además de su esfuerzo por proteger a Giosué mostrándose siempre con una sonrisa en el rostro a pesar de estar muy cansado, adolorido o con hambre. La inocencia de Giosué me resultó muy tierna y me agradó que su padre hiciera lo posible por alejar a su hijo de los terribles eventos sucedidos en el campo de concentración.
El final fue algo que me impactó y me hizo soltar algunas lágrimas, pues pensé que tendría un diferente desenlace, aún así me alegra haber tenido la oportunidad de ver esta maravillosa obra. Es una película que recomendaría ver pues está llena de muchos sentimientos y verdades.
