Cover made in ¡Hola amigos! El año pasado vi Your Name de Makoto Shinkai por primera vez y quedé fascinada con esta película de animación japonesa. Ahora con el estreno de su más reciente película llamada Suzume no Tojimari decidí que iba a ver todas sus producciones porque me interesa la forma en que aborda el amor y los diversos obstáculos que pueden surgir.
Hello friends! Last year I watched Makoto Shinkai's Your Name for the first time and was fascinated with this Japanese animated film. Now with the release of his most recent film called Suzume no Tojimari I decided that I was going to watch all of his productions because I'm interested in the way he approaches love and the various obstacles that can arise.
En el caso de la película que les voy a hablar hoy, 5 centímetros por segundo (2007), el obstáculo es la distancia. Es un tema del que conozco bien porque cuando era adolescente tuve un enamoramiento por alguien que vivía en otro país y nunca nos vimos, solo hablábamos por internet, hasta que todo se tornó desgastante y se rompió. Las relaciones a distancia son complicadas, pero no todo es tragedia porque algunas pueden ser que logren sobrevivir, y ese es mi mensaje positivo para ustedes por si están en una.
In the case of the film I'm going to talk about today, 5 Centimeters per Second (2007), the obstacle is distance. It is a subject I know well because when I was a teenager I had a crush on someone who lived in another country and we never saw each other, we only talked on the internet, until everything became exhausting and broke up. Long distance relationships are complicated, but not everything is a tragedy because some may be able to survive, and that is my positive message to you if you are in one.
Trama - Plot
La historia está narrada a través de 3 capítulos vistos desde el punto de vista de Takaki.
The story is told through 3 chapters seen from Takaki's point of view.
En el primero, titulado Flor de cerezo, podemos ver la amistad de Takaki y Akari, dos niños muy unidos que iban a la escuela juntos, pero al terminar la primaria Akari se tiene que mudar con su familia y ahora solo podrán mantenerse en contacto por medio de cartas. Sin embargo, un tiempo después, la familia de Takaki también debe mudarse a un lugar más lejos de donde vive Akari, entonces este toma la decisión de ir a verla por última vez y lleva todos sus sentimientos hacia ella en una carta que planea entregarle en persona.
In the first one, titled Cherry Blossom, we can see the friendship of Takaki and Akari, two very close children who went to school together, but after finishing elementary school Akari has to move with her family and now they can only keep in touch through letters. However, some time later, Takaki's family also has to move to a place further away from where Akari lives, so he decides to go to see her one last time and carries all his feelings for her in a letter that he plans to deliver to her in person.
En el segundo capítulo, llamado Cosmonauta, seguimos la vida de Takaki ya instalado en la nueva ciudad, yendo a la secundaria y preparándose para entrar a alguna universidad. Aunque este en realidad se centra en la historia de una joven llamada Kanae que tiene sentimientos por Takaki que no son correspondidos. Al principio batalla con la idea de confesarle lo que siente, pero luego se da cuenta que él tiene su corazón en otra parte y desiste. También vemos a Takaki, ya no esperando cartas, sino mensajes de textos y él también escribe mensajes que parece nunca enviar.
In the second chapter, called Cosmonaut, we follow Takaki's life already settled in the new city, going to high school and preparing to enter some university. Although this one actually focuses on the story of a young girl named Kanae who has unrequited feelings for Takaki. At first she struggles with the idea of confessing her feelings to him, but then she realizes that he has his heart elsewhere and gives up. We also see Takaki, no longer waiting for letters, but for text messages and he also writes messages that he never seems to send.
Y, por último, el tercer capítulo es el que le da el nombre a la película 5 centímetros por segundo. En este podemos ver a un Takaki adulto ya trabajando y viviendo solo, aunque parece estar un poco descuidado, y una joven mujer que se preocupa por él. También vuelve a entrar en escena Akari y un encuentro fortuito.
And finally, the third chapter is the one that gives its name to the movie 5 centimeters per second. In this one we can see an adult Takaki already working and living alone, although he seems to be a bit neglected, and a young woman who cares about him. Akari also re-enters the scene and a chance encounter.
Reseña - Review
Esta película dura 60 minutos pero los emplea bien para darnos a conocer esta historia de amores truncados, de soledad, de los primeros amores y el aprender a dejar ir. El ritmo es tranquilo, no suceden demasiadas cosas por lo que puede ser un poco aburrida al principio, pero las ganas de saber cómo va a terminar todo te mantienen al pendiente de cada situación.
This film lasts 60 minutes but it uses them well to show us this story of love cut short, loneliness, first loves and learning to let go. The pace is calm, not too many things happen so it can be a little boring at first, but the desire to know how everything will end keeps you on the edge of your seat.
La parte visual es para destacar, de nuevo Makoto Shinkai nos muestra unos paisajes muy lindos y unas tomas increíbles que logran transmitirnos los sentimientos que están sintiendo los personajes. A veces es todo más sombrío, apagado y triste, y otras más colorido y alegre. Lo que me estoy dando cuenta es que le gusta mucho mostrarnos los planos de los personajes mirando al cielo porque algo se está desarrollando allí. Lo vi en Your Name cuando estaba por caer el cometa y ahora acá en el lanzamiento de un cohete espacial.
The visual part is to highlight, again Makoto Shinkai shows us very nice landscapes and incredible shots that manage to convey the feelings that the characters are feeling. Sometimes it's all more somber, dull and sad, and others more colorful and cheerful. What I'm noticing is that he really likes to show us shots of the characters looking up at the sky because something is unfolding there. I saw it in Your Name when the comet was about to fall and now here in the space rocket launch.
Fue curioso que en el instante en que ven el cohete es cuando Kanae se dio cuenta que Takaki estaba buscando algo que nunca iba a encontrar en ella y allí mismo, mientras están observando el espectáculo, decide que es momento de dejar de estar detrás de él. Aunque no sin una escena de final de capítulo bastante emotiva que me emociono mucho. De hecho, el segundo capítulo fue mi historia favorita, ya que pude empatizar con Kanae y su amor no correspondido.
It was funny that the instant they see the rocket is when Kanae realized that Takaki was looking for something he was never going to find in her and right there, while they are watching the show, she decides it's time to stop being after him. Though not without a rather touching end of chapter scene that really got me emotional. In fact, the second chapter was my favorite story as I was able to empathize with Kanae and her unrequited love.
Me encantó el concepto del paso del tiempo y cómo uno se sigue aferrando a cosas que nos dañan hasta que despertamos, sufrimos un rato y lo dejamos ir. También el significado del título es muy lindo, los cinco centímetros por segundo se refieren al tiempo que tardan los pétalos de los árboles de cerezo en caer, eso se lo dijo Akari a Takaki. Creo que también puede ser representativo de que el ser humano a veces tarda en aceptar algo, pero cuando llega el momento de aceptación es rápido y sin vuelta atrás.
I loved the concept of the passage of time and how one keeps holding on to things that hurt us until we wake up, suffer for a while and let it go. Also the meaning of the title is very cute, the five centimeters per second refers to the time it takes for cherry tree petals to fall, that was said by Akari to Takaki. I think it can also be representative of how human beings sometimes take time to accept something, but when the time of acceptance comes, it's fast and no turning back.
Otra cosa para destacar es el soundtrack, muy tranquilo, hasta la canción final que está cargada de sentimientos y nos la presentan con un montaje de escenas de todo lo que estuvo pasando en la película, creo que esto también es algo que hace mucho Makoto Shinkai. También me gustó el hecho de que esta película no tiene elementos míticos o fantasiosos, es la vida misma, el tiempo y la distancia los que hacen de algo simple una obra maravillosa. A veces lo simple vale más para contar determinadas historias.
Another thing to highlight is the soundtrack, very calm, until the final song that is loaded with feelings and we are presented with a montage of scenes of everything that was happening in the film, I think this is also something that Makoto Shinkai does a lot. I also liked the fact that this film has no mythical or fantasy elements, it is life itself, time and distance that make something simple a wonderful work. Sometimes simple is better for telling certain stories.
