¡Hola amigos de Hive! Este fin de semana vi una película que estuve esperando y siguiéndole el rastro desde que anunciaron la adaptación. Así que hoy les traigo la reseña de Persuasión (2022)
Hello Hive friends! This weekend I saw a movie that I've been waiting for and keeping track of since they announced the adaptation. So today I bring you the review of Persuasion (2022).
Trama - Plot
En esta adaptación de un clásico de la literatura de Jane Austen, conoceremos a Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson), la hija del medio del señor Walter Elliot (Richard E. Grant). Ella procede de una familia muy adinerada, pero se enamora de un marinero y su familia la persuade para que desista de esa relación porque no la va a llevar a buen puerto, ya que estos viajan mucho y no tienen dinero ni prestigio. Así que Anne decide terminar su romance con Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) por esta causa, aunque no es lo que hubiera querido de verdad.
In this adaptation of a classic of Jane Austen's literature, we will meet Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson), the middle daughter of Mr. Walter Elliot (Richard E. Grant). She comes from a very wealthy family, but she falls in love with a sailor and her family persuades her to desist from this relationship because it will not lead to good port, since they travel a lot and have no money or prestige. So Anne decides to end her romance with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) for this reason, although it is not what she would have really wanted.
Pasan ocho años y Anne todavía no pudo olvidarlo, pero ahora tiene problemas más urgentes de los que ocuparse. Como de su padre derrochador de dinero que las dejó en bancarrota y ahora tienen que abandonar su mansión para mudarse a un lugar más accesible en Bath. Además, al quedar solo herederas mujeres, la fortuna y propiedades que posean serán para su primo, William Elliot (Henry Golding), al que ni siquiera conocen.
Eight years pass and Anne still couldn't forget him, but now she has more pressing problems to deal with. Like her money-spending father who left them bankrupt and now they have to leave their mansion to move to a more affordable place in Bath. Also, with only female heirs left, the fortune and property they own will go to their cousin, William Elliot (Henry Golding), whom they don't even know.
Antes de mudarse, Anne recibe carta de su hermana pequeña, Mary Musgrove (Mia McKenna-Bruce), que vive en Uppercross junto a su esposo e hijos, para que la vaya a ver porque se encuentra muy enferma. Anne y toda la familia ya saben que Mary siempre exagera sus dolencias solo como una especie de llamado de atención. Pero no le queda más remedio que acudir a verla.
Before moving in, Anne receives a letter from her younger sister, Mary Musgrove (Mia McKenna-Bruce), who lives in Uppercross with her husband and children, asking her to come and see her because she is very ill. Anne and the whole family already know that Mary always exaggerates her ailments just as a kind of wake-up call. But she has no choice but to go to see her.
Allí se encuentra con el capitán Wentworth, que está de pasada por la ciudad, y los sentimientos y esperanzas que tuvo guardados todo este tiempo salen a la luz. Aunque el capitán Wentworth pasa de ella porque le quedó cierto resentimiento por la manera en que terminaron las cosas. Es más, parece inclinado a pedirle matrimonio a Louisa Musgrove (Nia Towle), una de las cuñadas de Mary y amiga de Anne.
There she meets Captain Wentworth, who is passing through town, and the feelings and hopes she had kept bottled up all this time come to light. Although Captain Wentworth passes her by because he was left with some resentment over the way things ended. What's more, he seems inclined to propose to Louisa Musgrove (Nia Towle), one of Mary's sisters-in-law and Anne's friend.
Mientras Anne, en un viaje que hacen a la ciudad de Lyme, termina por conocer a su primo y este quedo cautivado por la joven. Aunque ninguno sabía de su parentesco en ese momento.
While Anne, on a trip to the town of Lyme, ends up meeting her cousin, who is captivated by the young woman. Although neither knew of their kinship at the time.
¿Pero realmente termino su romance con Wentworth o donde hubo fuego, cenizas quedan? ¿Aún hay tiempo de reavivar las llamas de este amor o ya es demasiado tarde?
But is her romance with Wentworth really over or where there was fire, ashes remain? Is there still time to rekindle the flames of this love or is it too late?
Opinión personal - Personal opinion
Quiero empezar diciendo que si son de los que les gustan las adaptaciones fieles y no pueden tolerar que se salgan de los esquemas habituales, no es la película indicada para que vean.
I want to start by saying that if you are one of those who like faithful adaptations and can't tolerate going off the beaten path, this is not the film for you to see.
A mí me gustó esta adaptación, como dije arriba, le venía siguiendo la pista desde que supe de su existencia, y quiero aclarar que desde el momento cero se sabía que iba a ser una adaptación distinta, con diálogos modernos y toques humorísticos. Así que no fue una gran sorpresa lo que me encontré.
I liked this adaptation, as I said above, I had been following it since I knew of its existence, and I want to clarify that from the very beginning I knew it was going to be a different adaptation, with modern dialogues and humorous touches. So it was not a big surprise what I found.
Aparte qué sentido tendría hacer otra adaptación de este clásico igual al libro siendo que ya hay una que se parece bastante. El público se renueva, pero también está bueno que se renueven las propuestas. Para mí no perdió su esencia de romance de época que lo caracteriza.
Besides, what sense would it make to make another adaptation of this classic that is the same as the book, since there is already one that is quite similar. The public renews itself, but it is also good that the proposals are renewed. For me it did not lose its essence of period romance that characterizes it.
Tengo una vara especial para medir estás películas de época y es que si me hacen anhelar, suspirar y sentir mariposas en el estómago cada vez que los protagonistas se miran con anheló, compró. Es todo lo que espero que me den, y no es poca cosa. Esta película me dio eso así que tiene mi visto bueno.
I have a special yardstick for measuring these period films and that is if they make me yearn, sigh and feel butterflies in my stomach every time the protagonists look at each other longingly, I'm buying. That's all I expect them to give me, and it's no small thing. This movie gave me that so it gets my thumbs up.
Esta historia también tiene una novedad que es la utilización del recurso de ruptura de la cuarta pared. Al principio fue un poco desconcertante, pero después me acostumbré y me pareció bastante ingenioso incorporarlo. Con este recurso toman fragmentos del libro de las partes en que la protagonista pensaba y nos lo dice en voz alta mientras mira a la cámara. De este modo nos hace partícipes y cómplices de sus pensamientos.
This story also has a novelty which is the use of the resource of breaking the fourth wall. At first it was a little disconcerting, but then I got used to it and I found it quite ingenious to incorporate it. With this resource they take fragments of the book from the parts in which the protagonist was thinking and she tells us out loud while looking at the camera. In this way she makes us participants and accomplices of her thoughts.
No siento que hayan cambiado grandes cosas más allá de esto y aquello, poniendo diálogos diferentes con referencias a temas modernos, con cosas que no existían en la época todavía; o haciendo hincapié en el sentido del humor que le aporta una frescura a la trama muy bienvenida.
I don't feel that they have changed much beyond this and that, putting in different dialogues with references to modern themes, with things that didn't exist at the time yet; or emphasizing the sense of humor that brings a welcome freshness to the plot.
La personificación de los personajes me pareció acertada. Una de mis favoritas fue Mary, la hermana menor de Anne. Me hizo reír mucho. Aunque el show se lo robo Dakota Johnson.
I thought the personification of the characters was spot on. One of my favorites was Mary, Anne's younger sister. She made me laugh a lot. Although the show was stolen by Dakota Johnson.
En la parte final donde se relata la carta de amor que Wentworth le escribe a Anne diciéndole que es mitad agonía y mitad esperanza, tan característica del libro, fue recortada, pero la esencia siguió estando. Me pareció igualmente hermosa y significativa.
In the final part where the love letter Wentworth writes to Anne telling her that it is half agony and half hope, so characteristic of the book, was cut out, but the essence remained. I found it equally beautiful and meaningful.
Y el detalle de empezar y terminar la película con la misma escena estuvo muy bueno.
And the detail of starting and ending the movie with the same scene was very good.

Palabras finales - Closing words
En definitiva, estoy conforme con el resultado final, pude disfrutarla, me hizo reír, me hizo suspirar. Es todo lo que esperaba así que seguramente la vuelva a ver. Como les dije, no le recomendaría está película a los puristas de hacer adaptaciones fieles. Pero si son de los que no les importa mucho, podrían darle una oportunidad y ver si les gusta.
All in all, I'm happy with the final result, I enjoyed it, it made me laugh, it made me sigh. It's everything I expected so I'll probably see it again. As I said, I wouldn't recommend this movie to the purists of faithful adaptations. But if you're one of those who don't mind it too much, you could give it a chance and see if you like it.
