Kiefer Sutherland is a fantastic actor and he made almost a decade in my life fun (2001-2010) with ”24 TV series’. Since then I have always been on the lookout for his movies and works to watch. So when I saw this TV series ’Rabbit Hole’ I quickly binged it without having second thoughts but then again I was totally disappointed that the series was canceled after the conclusion. It made me sad and it made me wonder what the REASON was?!
’Rabbit Hole’ is a series that gets you hooked from the start till the finish. The story is a roller-coaster trip with a lot of twists and turns which makes you think you are opening up a Matryoshka doll. I love that doll.
’Rabbit Hole (2023)’ is a spy thriller series with eight episodes of which each episode is with a runtime of 42 minutes. It was distributed by Paramount+ and created by John Requa with Glenn Ficarra. The series revolves around John Weir (Kiefer Sutherland) who is a private espionage operative in a world of corporate espionage who was suddenly framed for the murder of some top federal government officials. The series starred Kiefer Sutherland, Rob Yang, Charles Dance, Jason Butler Harner, Meta Golding, Walt Link, and Enid Graham.
The series starts by introducing us to John Weir in a bar having a drink. While he was having his drink he paid the bartender some extra money to discreetly change the channel of the TV to a sports channel for him to watch. Not long after, a man came to the bar and asked the bartender to change the TV channel to a business channel so he could check what was going on with his stock. After so much persuasion, John let the man have his way.
On the other hand, a lady at the bar caught John's attention. They both talked and flirted for a while until John asked for his bill and then they ended up sleeping together for the night. The next morning, John discovered that their hotel room was bugged with a camera and then he concluded this lady was sent by the FBI to implicate him. This accusation caused the two to go their separate ways, not on good terms.
As he left the hotel, he met Jo Madi, a FBI agent who has been monitoring him for a while now. Their conservation was fruitless and cut short by John. Later that day he went to see his old time / childhood friend, Valence. Valence offered him a job to do which involved Edward Homm, the financial investigator for the US treasury. John got the job done with his team but before the end of the day, he went into hiding for murder of Valence, and Edward Homm. Why is John Weir on the run?
My Review And Rating.
Like I said earlier in this post that I was disappointed this show was canceled but at the same time I am grateful it was canceled and understand why it was. Who do we blame for this misshapen, the writers? Yes, indeed the writers. We have about six screenwriters for this show and honestly I am disappointed that towards the ending, they were losing their touch which was also not that obvious.
The plot of the series was amazing. It was a storyline that was tense, suspenseful and fully packed with old school kind of thrillers. I love 'reverse conspiracy' narratives in thriller films like this where the story is not just the good guys getting caught in a complicated plot but instead, the heroes are the ones who play tricks and make fake plans with hidden twisted plans to achieve their main goals. I like this kind of plot because they are like a whodunnit. This is exactly ’Rabbit Hole’, but then I have issues with the narrations of the flashbacks. They were not portrayed well.
Also, the mystery, suspense, twist and turn were portrayed well. It kept me glued to this series because I want to see how far down the rabbit hole went. I want to know who the antagonist is. I want to know how the antagonist was able to keep every character in this show on their toes and always ten steps ahead of them. I want to know how he manipulated them mentally, and psychologically (especially John Weir). If you are not careful, as you watch the movie, you will get sucked into a vortex of confusion and then you get lost. At the end of the last episode, I concluded this series shows how technology will be the downfall of humanity.
The setting of the series was done well, the scene arrangements were perfectly done which is the reason it was able to hold the attention of the viewers till the end regardless of some few obvious flaws here and there. The scene arrangements were so good that you think they are about to unveil the antagonist but then it sends one down another rabbit hole chase. Even till the end, the antagonist was not revealed which kept me guessing who the character is, but unfortunately the series was canceled. I guess we would never know who the genius villain was.
The Cast performances were excellent. Kiefer Sutherland brought his Jack Bauer vibe out to play in this show which for me was exciting and nostalgic. Some characters that surprised me with their performances are Rob Yang and Walt Klink. These two stole the spotlight whenever their scene came up and I must say it was satisfying that they portrayed strong roles in this show.
Rating this TV series, I will give 8.5 out of 10 stars. It was worth the time and it was satisfying at the end. If you were a fan of Jack Bauer back then, you would love this one. Also, if you love old school thrillers, like whodunnit, check this series out.
