Evil, a poison that spreads its dark vine into one's soul. A silent intruder, who whispers in the night and is tenacious during the witchy hour. Like cancerous cells, it multiplies unseen and silently infecting one's thoughts with a venomous gleam.
This movie ’When Evil Lurks (2023)’ is the exact description of what I wrote above. This movie left me with a shocking expression at the end and this movie will be a satisfying watch for horror lovers and gore hounds. I know these days Hollywood has failed in the horror genre this year which can not be compared to last year's experience when we had the likes of ”Pearl, Hellraiser, Megan, Halloween Ends, X, and Barbarian” to watch. This year, I didn't have much fun with horror films.
’When Evil Lurks’ is a Spanish supernatural psychological horror film that was written and directed by Demián Rugna. It is a movie that was co-produced by Argentina and the USA. The plot revolves around two brothers in a remote village who discover the sick body of a possessed man, due to the rotten stage of the man's, the two brothers decide to dispose of the body. As they did, they unleashed chaos in the village. The movie starred Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demián Salomón, Silvina Sabater, Luis Ziembrowski, Marcelo Michinaux, Virginia Garófalo, Emilio Vodanovich, and Isabel Quinteros.
The movie started by introducing us to two brothers Pedro and Jaime who live in a remote village. They both were home at night when suddenly they heard multiple gunshots. Not sure what it was, they went back to their house and waited till the next day to check what the problem was. It was daylight when the two brothers went into the woods to check out what happened last night and they discovered a mutilated Body.
Searching the body for identification of any sort, they discovered a passport and some papers which lead to María Elena, an elderly woman, who lives in the village too with her two sons. Getting to her home they found out that the body in the woods was a visitor who was supposed to professionally dispose of the body of her eldest son who has been possessed by a powerful demon for a year.
Pedro and Jamie saw María's eldest son. They were disgusted because his body was already decaying and accompanied by a foul smell that took their breath away. Irritated by the situation of the body and how María’s son was still alive, they immediately went to their village's police station to report the issue but they didn't get any help. The next day, they disposed of María's eldest son against her wish and in doing so they unleashed a cancerous chaos that ravaged the entire village within the space of 24hrs. What evil did the two brothers unleash?
My Review And Rating.
In this movie, if you think you will see the regular demonic possession you see all the time in movies, body contortions, holy water, priest and exorcism, you will be wasting your time. This movie portrays the raw image of how possession works, how it starts and how it ends up being cancerous. Honestly in my opinion, this is a fresh horror film, it's new, and very engaging. It is a breath of fresh air in horror genres.
The reason why this movie stands out from other horror films I have seen relating to demons, possession is because of the storyline, how the story was told and the script. We have Demián Rugna to thank for that. He did an excellent job with the story and how he directed the movie. It was exceptional and unique for me.
The story of this movie was written in a way that demonic entities that were used are strange but they still circle around every standard of a possession film. Also, the viewers are left to think through figuring things out themselves as the protagonists do from his POV. I suggest you watch this movie with as little knowledge as possible. The synopsis I gave is just the first act which is no spoiler.
The Cast did well, the performances were great, convincing and I was able to connect with them easily. The scene arrangements were done well. Also, all the scenes delivered incredible and relentless sequences that are both gripping and gruesome to watch. The kills are like jump scares, unexpected and happened within a small space of time. They are also filled with gore and blood splatter. The film location was selected well and fitting for the movie.
The ending was written well. I want more, because the ending left us in suspense of how the village would survive with the evil being born into human flesh. Also, the ending made me question if Pedro really won against the demon that plagued his village sparing no one in it's path. Hopefully, there
Rating this movie, I will give it 8.7 out of 10 stars. I really enjoyed it, it is worth the time and satisfying also in the gore aspect. If you are easily triggered, do not watch this movie. Also, there was child mutilation here and tons of horrible kills. I would gladly recommend this movie for horror fans and gore hounds. This one is mainly for you and you would enjoy it.
