Yes! Finally, I have been able to watch this famous TV series a lot of people are gushing about. At first, I got to know about this series when a good friend of mine recommended the Book series to me from which the series is adapted. The book series is divided into eight parts. I must say the book was a splendid experience for me. I enjoyed reading it and I can say the same for the TV series also.
In this post, I will be reviewing the first season and maybe as time permits, I will be reviewing the rest of the seasons. Bridgerton is an American historical fiction romance TV series that is based on Julia Quinn’s series of romance novels. Produced by Shonda Rhimes and distributed by Netflix. The TV series centers around eight children of the Noble Bridgerton family. The story was set around the Regency era in London when Noble youths are launched into society for marriage.
According to the story, the head of the Bridgeton family died ten years before the first season of the series. The eight children of the Bridgerton family were named in alphabetical order: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. Each season will center around one of the children finding love and exploring what life has to offer.
Since I am reviewing the first season of the series, let's get to it. This season centers around Daphne Bridgerton, the oldest daughter of the family who has come of age to be released to society to find her suitor with her Brother Anthony by her side. Anthony is the oldest son of the family and also the head since the demise of the father ten years ago.
Unfortunately for Daphne, she was not the only one who has come of age to come out into society. The Featherington, a Bible family living across from their street also were releasing three of their daughters into the society. All the eligible girls were to be presented to the Queen (Charlotte) before they were released into society to find a suitor. Daphne was the one whom Queen Charlotte was impressed with during the presentation. Impressed the Queen named her 'The Diamond of the First Water'.
Even though Daphne was best during the presentation to the Queen, no suitor showed up to the Bridgerton house for her hand in marriage. This made Daphne worried and frustrated that she might not find a suitor on things thereby becoming worthless in society. What will she do? How can she find a suitor before it is too late for her?
The Bridgerton family got invited to a ball where the young eligible ladies can showcase themselves more to catch any suitor's eye. During the ball party, Daphne encountered Simon Bassett, the Duke of Hastings who has arrived in town to assist his friend Will with his boxing career, as well as to settle his recently deceased father's affairs, taking over the estate and the title of Duke.
Later on, Daphne made an agreement with the Duke to pretend to society that they are courting so that Daphne will become more desirable, and the Duke who has ladies gushing about since he had no intention of getting married. Will both get what they want? Will the agreement sustain the newfound relationship? You have to watch the show to know what happens to The Duke and Daphne.
My Review And Rating.
I will be honest now, this show was amazing, I liked it a lot. Though I thought it was going to be boring because most books that have been adapted into motion pictures end up disappointing one. This show was actually good, well portrayed, and entertaining with a lot of dramatic themes.
If you haven't read the book and you are watching the show for the first time, you would be confused as to why there were a lot of black royals. It is fictional and fantasy on what if life was actually like that. Though I was a bit disappointed with the show because there were some parts of the book that were rewritten by Shonda to make it suitable for the show. That I did not like.
The show explored a lot of power themes like love and sexuality, gender roles and expectations, societal reputations, wealth and betrayal, and family dynamics. All these played an important role in making this show captivating, entertaining, and rich. I love the storytelling of this show. It hooked me from the beginning, especially hearing the familiar voice of Julie Andrews as Lady Whistledown, the gossip columnist voiceover (My Dearest Reader).
The production of the show was exquisite, rich, beautiful, and lush. The location was beautiful, and the wardrobes of each character added color to the show making it bright and amazing. It draws the viewers into the luxuriousness and the grandeur of the Regency era then, making the viewers have a close experience of how it was back then. The music was classic and appealing to the ears and the CGI was amazing, crystal clear.
Let's talk about the cast. The Cast was amazing with their performances. Each character was able to maintain their spotlight substantially without boring the audience. Their mannerisms seem to come to them naturally and one could see the work they put into preparing for their roles. My favorite characters are Queen Charlotte, Penélope Featherington, Lady Danbury, and Eloise Bridgerton. For Duke Simon, I know a lot of people gush about him, it is not the same for me. The most beautiful man in the world, how?! It's a no for me.
I enjoyed this show, it was entertaining, dramatic, and interesting for me. I will say Shonda Rhimes did a fantastic job with this one and I am excited to watch the second season. Rating this show, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. It's a good couples and family show (except for children). I would like to recommend this show to historical fiction romance lovers. If you are yet to see it. You see it soon.
