There were quite a few video games that made my teenage years fun and one of them was Mortal Kombat. After the release of the first film in 2021, I looked forward to the sequel with high expectations. I was eager to see what the creators would come up with and whether they would stick to the original lore of the game. If you are a fan of this game, you might be disappointed with this sequel.
Mortal Kombat II (2026) features the return of characters like Sonya Blade, Jax, Cole Young, Liu Kang, Kano and others, and tries to make this movie more entertaining with the addition of new characters like Johnny Cage who takes the center stage, Shao Kahn, Kitana, Jade and a few others.
Written by Jeremy Slater and directed by Simon McQuoid, the opening scene takes the audience to a region called Edenia where Earth's champion remains and who must fight Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) to win the tournament.
King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam) is earth's last champion and before the fight, he gives his daughter, Princess Kitana, a necklace that can connect her to Lord Raiden. The daughter watches her father fight and is killed by Shao Kahn. As Shao Kahn rules Edenia and enslaves the people, Kitana vows to save them.
Fast forward years later, another tournament is about to begin and Earthrealm's champions are short by one fighter. Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) meet a played-out 90s Hollywood actor, Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), and try to convince him to join them. At first, Johnny is excited to be a part of something exciting until he learns it's a fight to the death. He turned down their offer and left just as the tournament was about to begin. Who will save Earthrealm from Shao Kahn and his ferocious minions?
My Review And Rating
As I stated earlier, I had high hopes for this sequel and was excited for it. I avoided seeing any of the trailers because I didn't want spoilers. Turns out, the movie was a bit of a letdown, just a bit. Some parts are worth mentioning and commendable. The fact that the plot diverted so much from the lore of the martial arts game was a little saddening. This game is one of the most unique franchises out there and I expect its movie adaptations to retain the uniqueness and have a flair of their own. Mortal Kombat I was tolerable at best but this Mortal Kombat II erased whatever interest I might have in seeing any more sequels by these creators.
The storyline is written and directed in a way that felt like I was watching a Marvel Comics spinoff of Avengers or Guardians Of The Galaxy films. I understand Jeremy Slater has worked with Marvel Studios before but there should be a clear distinction between the CGI characters and action sequences in the MCU and those in Mortal Kombat.
Also, it seemed like there was a blend of some GOT gore style into this movie. I don't mind the R-rated mood of the movie, after all it's about a martial arts tournament. However, the creators turned the notch up a lot and made this movie more violent and gorier than the previous film. I mostly felt sorry for Cole Young and that last fight with Shao Kahn? I'll say no more. If you are sensitive about violence in movies, consider this a trigger warning.
One commendable part of this movie is the cast. I was happy to see Jessica McNamee return as Sonya Blade and other characters from the previous film. Sonya Blade and Liu Kang are some of my favourite fighters in the game. McNamee embodied her character in an admirable way and wasn't afraid of a challenging fight. I was impressed with Adeline Rudolph's role as Kitana. She stood out as a new character, embodying the fierceness and rebellious spirit of a princess determined to reclaim her throne. She was interesting to watch.
I'm not a fan of Karl Urban so seeing him act as Johnny Cage was kind of a let down for me. Even worse, the story was centered around him as the winning chip of the tournament and he took up most of the screen time, thereby pushing old characters from the previous film to the background.
I'd also commend them for the set designs which were a bit close to the game's, giving the fights an adrenaline-pumping effect like the fight between Sonya Blade and Sindel, and the resurrected Kung Lao versus Liu Kang. I however didn't like the transitions and editing especially in the Hell realm scenes. They were erratic and dampened the viewing experience, making me wonder if Bi-Han and Scorpion would ever settle their beef and stop fighting in these films.
Rating this movie, I'd give it 6 out of 10 stars and I do so reluctantly because I expected more. Mortal Kombat is a unique game but the creators of this sequel failed to capture its distinct identity for the fans to enjoy.
