"You want me to be a Night Agent?"
A week ago, I watched the series titled 'The Terminal List' and I was incredibly entertained! A day ago, I decided to watch The Night Agent series and I enjoyed it way more than I expected. I will say, my weekends have been great because I was entertained with super thrilling and binge-able series.
At first when I started watching the first episode of this series, the directorial style, the suspense and tension was familiar to me. I started to think, because I have watched a series with the same energy and style before. So, I decided to look up the executive producers of this series and I discovered they were the same people who produced 'SWAT TV Series'. That piece of information alone pumped me up to finish the Ten episodes of 'The Night Agent' yesterday. If you haven't seen the 'SWAT series' before I beg and urge you to go watch it. You won't be disappointed So let's get straight to the review.
'The Night Agent' is an action and conspiracy thriller TV series that was adapted from a book with the same title written by Matthew Quirk. I think I will be exploring this author soon because this is the first time I am hearing about him. This series premiered on Netflix around March 2023. It starred Gabriel Basso, Luciane Buchanan, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Sarah Desjardins, Eve Harlow, Phoenix Raei, D.B. Woodside, Hong Chau and Andre Anthony.
Brief Summary Of The Plot.
A young man, Peter Sutherland, a low-level FBI agent who works in the basement of the White House, awaiting a phone call on a phone that never rings. On a fateful night, he was on a train, DC Metro. As the train is about to move, he notices a mysterious man dressed in a black jacket and black hoodie who sets down a backpack underneath a seat and immediately jumps off the train. Immediately Peter went to check what was inside the backpack only to discover it was a bomb.
He quickly tells everyone to get out of the train before the bomb's detonation. He saved a lot of lives when the bomb went off. After the incident, he was recruited by White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr to work in the secretive Night Agent program. A year goes by after the incident and Peter still does his job at the White House by waiting for a call from a phone that never rings. However, things changed for Peter when he received a call from the phone that never rings from a lady called Rose Larkin.
Rose tells Peter that she was given instructions by her Uncle and Aunt to call the special number where Peter works because their house was under attack by unknown assassins. Peter immediately calls in patrol officers to make Rose safe only for him to receive exclusive instructions from Diane to go extract Rose himself. Peter gets involved in an unexpected conspiracy that runs deep to the White House. To uncover those behind the conspiracy, Peter and Rose began to work together with the support of Diane. Will Peter uncover the truth? Will the conspirators be caught?
Characters That Picked My Interest.
Phoenix Raei as Dale and Eve Harlow as Ellen
Dale and Ellen are two peas in a pod and without them as the mysterious assassins, I don't think I would be on the edge of my seat watching this series. I enjoyed their characters, their performances and mannerism came to them effortlessly. They both had a strong chemistry together. Any time they make an appearance, I just know that a suspenseful kill will happen. Their characters were well built with a good background story. They were ruthless and unpredictable. Their performances were amazing.
Hong Chau as Diane Farr
First of all, this woman is beautiful, especially with her glasses. I love the silverfox appearance with her, it suits her. I enjoyed watching her because her performance was amazing. She was so good that you wouldn't suspect that she is part of the antagonist characters. Her behavior was very believable and relatable. Though I feel her character lacks a little bit of backstory but still it wasn't that obvious.
D. B. Woodside as Erik Monks and Fola Evans-Akingbola as Chelsea
It's been a while since I have seen Woodside on screen. Seeing him perform in this series got me excited because I was curious about his role. Though he was brought in the fourth episode, I still enjoyed his presence. However I wish he was given a more prominent role and he wasn't killed off at the end. Akingbola was amazing. Her character was ridgid, not easily persuaded, and she doesn't break rules which became a little bit annoying for me but in the end, I still like her.
Basso as Peter Sutherland and Buchanan as Rose Larkin
Buchanan was the spotlight of this series for me. It even got to a time when I totally forgot Basso was actually the main character. I don't blame Basso, but I thought if it was another person that was casted as Peter Sutherland, maybe it would have been better. But my curiosity took me to read some of the reviews about the adapted book and I read that Peter 's character was actually much more annoying than the TV series. Regardless, both Buchanan and Basso were amazing together, their performance was good and they projected their roles excellently well, but my favorite card goes to Buchanan who shined throughout the series. She was exceptional!
My Review And Rating.
This series is a fast moving and fun action series that keeps you on the edge of your seat and engaged. It was entertaining, wild, suspenseful, packed with justified tension. The story was gripping and it was skillfully synchronized well with espionage, action, conspiracy, romance and suspense which turned it into a captivating narrative. The script was well written, the dialogues were excellently written. I commend the scriptwriters for this. They did an amazing job and delivered an engaging story.
The directorial style was excellent for me, the pacing is well-arranged, which made it possible for gradual development of the intricate plot. The action stunts were okay and realistic. The mystery, twist and turns were unveiled appropriately which is part of the reason why this series is so intriguing and engaging.
This series also delves into themes like loyalty, trust, betrayal, deception and it also explores the thin line between right and wrong. Let's not forget the cinematography and visuals. Every scene was well arranged and shot well with proper lighting. Watching this series, I also got hooked from the beginning till the end. It is a must watch series. I enjoyed it and it was entertaining.
Rating this amazing series, I will give it 8.5 out 10 stars. I will recommend it to lovers of thrillers, conspiracy and spy films. I urge you to binge this series as soon as possible if you haven't seen it yet.
