Do you know what has been one of the worst times in human history? Many say it was the first and second world wars, and they are partly right, since in those dark years many innocent people died and were massacred. But an even darker and more atrocious time that is still seen today is the era of slavery, an era full of racism and crimes that was experienced all over the world, but which was felt more strongly in the countries colonized by Europeans. I think it was an even more horrible time than what happened in the Second World War, since it is not known for sure how many enslaved people from Africa died in the hands of slavers or in forced labor, in countries like the United States, Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia and other countries of the Caribbean, South America and North America, there were many kidnapped Africans who died. And what is even worse, only the crimes committed in the USA are remembered and all the even worse crimes in Latin and Caribbean countries are ignored.
One thing I always wonder about is that there were people enslaved against their will who fought back? And although history shows it, it paints them as white killing criminals. But the reality is totally different, and that reality is what Quentin Tarantino's movie Django Unchained, released in 2012, wants to show us. A film that tells the point of view of a young black man enslaved and separated from his wife and how he takes revenge for everything that has been done to him, but before talking about what I like most about this film, let's talk a little about the plot of it.
¿Sabes cuál ha sido una de las peores épocas para la historia humana? Muchos dicen que fue la primera y segunda guerra mundial, y en parte tienen razón, ya que en esos años oscuros muchas personas inocentes murieron y fueron masacradas. Pero una época aún más oscura y atroz y que hasta nuestros días aún se ve es la época de esclavismo, una época llena de racismo y crímenes que se vivió en todo el mundo, pero que se sintió más fuerte en los países colonizados por los europeos. Yo opino que fue una época aún más horrible que lo ocurrido en la segunda guerra mundial, ya que no se sabe a ciencia cierta cuantas personas esclavizadas de África murieron en manos de esclavistas o en trabajos forzados, en países como estados unidos, Haití, Venezuela, Colombia y demás países del caribe, América del sur y América del norte, fueron muchos los africanos secuestrados que murieron. Y lo que es más peor aún, únicamente se recuerdan los crímenes cometidos en EEUU y se ignoran todos los aún peores crímenes de países latinos y del caribe.
¿Algo que siemrpe3 me pregunto es hubo personas esclavizadas en contra de su voluntad que se defendieron? Y aunque la historia así lo demuestra, los pinta como criminales mata blancos. Pero la realidad es totalmente distinta, y esa realidad es la que nos quiere mostrar la película de Quentin Tarantino lanzada en el 2012 Django Unchained. Una película que cuenta el punto de vista de un joven negro esclavizado y separado de su esposa y como va tomando venganza por todo lo que le han hecho, pero antes de hablar de lo que más me gusta de esta película, hablemos un poco de la trama de la misma.
Django Unchained begins with a group of enslaved black men to be sold to other owners, in the caravan is Django a man who has had everything taken from him and is now without hope. But out of nowhere appears a bounty hunter named King Schultz, who seeks Django to help him in a search mission, after Schultz kills the slavers who took Django, he sees it as an opportunity to regain his wife and as Schultz treats him like a normal human being, he accepts, Schultz also promises to teach him everything he knows about the bounty hunter's trade and thus also earn money. So together they embark on a great slaughter of slavers and criminals who are the most wanted men in the United States, but this great hunt will take him back to his wife and they will have a reunion, but will he manage to rescue her? or will he die trying? Django Unchained comienza con un grupo de hombres negros esclavizados que serán vendidos a otros dueños, en la caravana esta Django un hombre que le han arrebatado todo y que ahora está sin esperanza. Pero de la nada aparece un cazarrecompensas llamado King Schultz, que busca a Django para que lo ayude en una misión de búsqueda, luego de que Schultz mate a los esclavistas que llevaban a Django, este lo ve como una oportunidad para recuperar a su esposa y como Schultz lo trata como a un ser humano normal, este acepta, además Schultz le promete enseñarle todo lo que sabe del oficio de cazarrecompensas y que así tambien gane dinero. Así que juntos se embarcan en una gran matanza de hombres esclavistas y criminales que son los más buscados de estados unidos, pero esta gran cacería lo llevara de vuelta con su esposa y tendrán un reencuentro, ¿pero lograra rescatarla? o morirá en el intento? te invito a ver esta película para descubrirlo.
Now that we know what the plot is about, let's talk a little bit about the curiosities and unique aspects of the film. For example that this is not an original idea of director Quentin Tarantino, rather it is an adaptation of a subgenre of the European Western style called Spaghetti western, Django is a recurring character in this subgenre of westerns and usually plays the same role, a man seeking justice or revenge, in fact to date more than 30 films have been shot with the character of Django and in a scene of Tarantino's film Jamie Foxx gets in a bar with the old Django, so it is a film with many references.
Another reference is the beginning of the KKK, since in a scene where a large group of armed men on horses who are going to kill Django and Schultz because the latter allows a black man to ride a horse and walk among whites normally, it is observed how this group of racist people went out to kill people were armed and wearing white masks, although in the film they are portrayed as just dumb men with no organization who disagree because of the horrible masks, in this film there is also a lot of black humor with things that some people have a lot of devotion to such as the KKK.
Ahora que ya sabemos de lo que va la trama, hablemos un poco de las curiosidades y aspectos únicos de la película. Por ejemplo que esta no es una idea original del director Quentin Tarantino, más bien es una adaptación de un subgénero del estilo Western Europeo llamado Spaghetti western, Django es un personaje recurrente en este subgénero de películas de vaqueros y normalmente cumple le mismo papel, un hombre que busca justicia o venganza, de hecho hasta la fecha se han rodado más de 30 películas con el personaje de Django y en una escena de la película de Tarantino Jamie Foxx se consigue en un bar con el viejo Django, así que es una película con muchas referencias.
Otra referencia es el inicio de los KKK, ya que en una escena donde un gran grupo de hombres armados sobre caballos que van a matar a Django y a Schultz porque este último permite que un negro monte a caballo y camine entre blancos con normalidad, se observa como este grupo de personas racistas salían a matar personas iban armados y con máscaras blanca, aunque en la película se les retrata como simples hombres tontos y sin organización que están en desacuerdo por las horribles máscaras, en esta película tambien hay mucho humor negro con cosas que algunas personas tienen mucha devoción como son los KKK.
A painful but totally true reference is how they whipped the slaves who tried to escape, and this is something that is not only seen in this Tarantino's film, it can also be seen in 12 Years a Slave from 2013 or in the most recent film starring Will Smith Emancipation, where you can see the inhuman treatment given to the slaves, sometimes they were whipped to death. You can see Django's desperation when they are whipping his wife and how he humiliates himself to stop whipping her, it is painful and gives us an idea of the great anger he feels towards the slavers throughout the film.
One last thing that I find very exceptional about the film is the acting of the key characters, for example we have Christoph Waltz a German actor that generated controversy for me, since in another film of the same Tarantino he acts as a Nazi but in this one he is a man without prejudices, so the idea of seeing him may shock in your mind, but he is an actor that adapts very well to the role and plays it with a lot of charisma and intensity, and for that same great performance he won the Oscar for his role in this film. The other actor that I also consider with a solid performance is Leonardo DiCaprio who I honestly never thought I would see him being a black hating slaver, but to see how he also adapted very well to this role and how he took it to the limit, is fascinating, it leaves you in awe of his way of playing Monsieur Calvin J. Candie. And finally another character that also impressed me a lot with his performance which was very bizarre was Samuel L. Jackson who in this movie acts as a black slaver, that is a black man who hates other blacks, this was something that was totally out of the standards, but Samuel L. Jackson knew how to handle it very well being totally ruthless in his role, so these 3 actors did very well.
Una referencia dolorosa pero totalmente cierta es como azotaban a los esclavos que trataban de escapar, y esto es algo que no solo se ve en esta película de Tarantino, tambien se puede observar en 12 Years a Slave del 2013 o en la más reciente protagonizada por Will Smith Emancipation, donde se ve el trato inhumano que se le daba a los esclavos, que algunas veces los azotaban hasta la muerte. Se puede ver la desesperación de Django cuando están azotando a su esposa y como se humilla para que la dejen de azotar, es algo doloroso y nos da una idea de la gran ira que siente hacia los esclavistas por toda la película.
Una última cosa que me parece muy excepcional de la película es la actuación de los personajes claves, por ejemplo tenemos a Christoph Waltz un actor alemán que me genero controversia, ya que en otra película del mismo Tarantino actúa como un nazi pero en esta es un hombre sin prejuicios, así que la idea de verlo puede chocar en tu mente, pero es un actor que se adapta muy bien al papel y lo interpreta con mucho carisma e intensidad, y por esa misma gran actuación se ganó el Oscar por su papel en esta película. El otro actor que tambien considero con una actuación solida es Leonardo DiCaprio que honestamente nunca pensé que lo vería siendo un esclavista odiador de negros, pero ver como tambien se adaptó muy bien a este papel y como lo llevo al límite, es fascinante, te deja muy asombrado su modo de interpretar al Monsieur Calvin J. Candie. Y por último otro personaje que tambien me impresiono mucho con su a actuación la cual fue muy bizarra fue Samuel L. Jackson que en esta película actúa como un negro esclavista, es decir un negro que odia a otros negros, esto fue algo que se salió totalmente de los estándares, pero que Samuel L. Jackson supo manejarlo muy bien siendo totalmente despiadado en su papel, así que estos 3 actores lo hicieron muy bien.
