REVIEW

This is not the first time Swedish director Lasse Hallström has made a drama about human relationships with his dog. Previously there was My Life as a Dog who made his name into an Academy Award nomination in the best director category and Hachi: A Dog's Tale which is an American remake of the classical Japanese drama Hachikō Monogatari. A Dog's Purpose itself is also an adaptation of the bestselling novel titled the same as W. Bruce Cameron who is also believed to write the script of the film.

Regardless of the controversy about animal abuse that shadows it a week before it's released, A Dog's Purpose actually has an interesting omnibus concept. Hallström shares his story in four different stories centering on the life of a dog named Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) from birth to death until he is reincarnated in the form of four different dogs and different stories.

Soft as Corgi's fur, that's how I describe A Dog's Purpose. With or without dogs even the directorship of Hallström always has the same characteristics; He never hesitates to dramatize everything in an attempt to manipulate the emotions of his audience in the most convenient way with many beautiful visual bandits and manipulative scoring. Yes, like Hachi: A Dog's Tale, this is a heart-streaking story. Get ready with a lot of tissue supplies, especially if you are a lousy dog lover with a subgenre of human-dog-dog drama of this kind, A Dog's Purpose will obviously loudly punch you hard, not just once but many times whether it's in the most moments Sadness associated with death (yes, there are many deaths here) or happiness in a reunion.

But as a film reviewer, I must also be objective. Yes, to be honest I was trapped in the manipulative Hallström directing, the emotion drained away to see how Bailey's life and death from one phase to another represented with many cute dog types ranging from Retriver, German Shepherd, Corgi to the Great Pyrenees, but hard to Said that A Dog's Purpose is a solid omnibus, in fact if you want to be honest he is very crappy in stringing fantasy narratives that actually have good potential. Yes, I understand that the Retriver segment is noticeably longer than the others because it is necessary to form a relationship between Bailey and his first employer, Ethan to be connected to the last segment. But unfortunately, the two middle segments feel forced, like a glimpse of life is not important that aims to give the impression that Bailey has been through various phases of long life in a state of distress and happy without really maximized. While the elements of romance and coming of age are inserted raw because it is never easy to explore the novel long and detailed in limited duration of impact. 

The lucky side of the comedy that comes mostly from Josh's "Olaf" Gad's vote is good enough to enjoy, Bailey's several times and doggie behavior is capable of giving a laugh or at least a smile. And I like the ending, though forced but there is a message about loyalty and reunion whose emotional impact is much more elegant than a parable of death that is actually quite cheap.
