Review Film: GINTAMA (2017)

Review by @film-trail · 3078d · of Gintama

Human characters with unique hairstyles and models of excessive behaviour, strange creatures milling about, random comedy, imaginative worlds, sequences of events beyond logic. Gintama has everything that makes an adaptation of live-action manga favoured. Turning the manga element into a "real world" order will double its absurdity, which is the main attraction. And through the manga adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's same title, the audience goes to an alternate version of the Edo period, where the Alien race called Amanto (sky man) invaded Earth. The resistance of the samurai failed, and now they are alienated, forbidden to lift the sword.

The greatest influence for humans regarding Amanto's presence is technology. Cash register, television, scooter, until the plane can be encountered on Edo version of this one. As a result, the culture of society changed, as did the main character, Gintoki (Shun Oguri) eating parfait. Gintoki is a former samurai who thanks to his toughness dubbed the "White Devil". Together with a teenage samurai named Shinpachi (Masaki Suda) and Kagura (Kanna Hashimoto), an alien tangled blue-eyed redheaded girl, Gintoki opened a freelance business. His latest work is to investigate the loss of a sword suspected to be the weapon of a serial killer who is currently in action.

Instead of plunging directly into the main conflict, his first act was dominated by a haphazard comedy parade, from cheap karaoke animations (once the film called it) to rectify and then corrected the opening scene, until the race to chase the Shogun's gold beetle out of Gintoki and his friends, comrades with an army of Shinsengumi. Unless introducing some characters, the first half does not intersect with the main plot. Nevertheless, comedic foundations are established in this phase. Although for the audience who is layman about manga/anime joking style takes time to get used to, overall the antics are built. An absurdity-based antics that will not be tiring and always fresh, the kind of Captain Shinsengumi smearing the body almost naked with honey for the beetle's lure.

The use of the alternative world frees explorations that by Yūichi Fukuda as the director is used to exhibit unlimited imaginative sights. Despite his live-action status, Gintama retains the cartoonish aroma on various sides, both stylish samurai action and over-the-top comedy spirit. Fukuda who also perform the task of writing the script got the freedom to have fun at will. Seen from his character repeatedly trying to interact directly with the audience (break the fourth wall), realizing the existence as a character in the movie, or spill reference about other series (Dragon Ball, One Piece, Gundam, and others). Even meta jokes about touching the copyright limit when Nausicaa suddenly appeared to come out, Unfortunately, the creative concept is just Fukuda apply on the surface. As the central story begins to rush in, everything falls towards Kellison. The concept of "Edo-era modernization alien" is wasted, lost without a trace. For without that basis, the scroll of his story will not be affected. Entering the final third of the journey, Gintama transforms its freshness into a generic action (while still humoured) located on a gigantic plane that is no different than Hollywood's mediocre blockbuster production, with Gintoki fighting tops against a monster-shaped enemy from the Resident Evil movie.

Intention to give emotional weight to the touch of friendship drama actually lowered the tension due to the weak dramatic writing of Fukuda script. Also, his submission is often drowned in a tedious and protracted chatter, producing a duration of 130 minutes which is unnecessarily long. Shun Oguri still keeps the charm as he shows in the Crows Zero before, now adds humorous skill. While Kanna Hashimoto stole the heart through a combination of adorable behaviour mixed with his own foolishness. Both of them breathed life when Gintama almost run out of power due to the failure to maximize the creativity of the premise.
