THE REVIEW
THE REVIEW
Doing almost everything on your first movie debut as a director, scriptwriter and editor is certainly not easy, but Nicolas Pesce bravely started it with great passion and confidence that led to satisfactory results. Nothing up there, Pesce took a step less selling by dipping his first full length movie in a thick monochrome color that seemed to have given the artsy label to The Eyes of My Mother despite the fact that this was not the kind of chewy chewy but clearly naive to say Spectacle that will make you sit comfortably in 77 minutes duration.
The Pesce narrative may not be remarkable, but it is hard to refute the story of how a bloodthirsty monster was born into the world in the form of a beautiful girl named Fransisca (Kika Magalhaes). Splitting his story into three major chapters, the audience is invited to watch little Fransisca live happily with his father and mother in a quiet ranch out of town before a bloody tragedy turns him into a terrible devil figure. In the following chapters, we will see Fransisca in a larger form. He lives on his own, longing for love and companions who then force him to look for people out there in his own way so that he is no longer lonely.
The Eyes of My Mother is a great happiness for the horror takers who miss the nightmare spectacle which is both beautiful at the same time. This is a movie that will continue to haunt you even to the point that its end credits roll. Maybe I'm overreacting, maybe not, but witnessing how Pesce managed to make you shudder even without having to use clear colors it was a great job. As I said, the narrative may be too simple, but that does not mean there is no power in it. The Eyes of My Mother may be more to a character study experience, how his audience was invited to enter the life of Fransisca, how his childhood changed drastically when he and his mum who were an eye difference expert came a strange salesman who boarded the restroom. From here The Eyes of My Mother begins to show his true face.
There is a cruelty here that starts from a small thing like the head of a cow that is stoned on the dining table including eyeballs pruned as the education of the mother for his beloved daughter, then continued with a stronger moment such as snoring vocal cords, eyes out, But the Power of My Mother's Eyes is not merely a parade of brutality and solemnity, it is arguably Pesce chose not to present the pictures explicitly, the imagination of his audience lying to commemorate his own horror, Pesce better equipped all the way to Fransisca And how He lived his lonely daily life. Yes, the character of Fransisca was interesting. Growing up in a normal family in before everything changed drastically. We will then see more. And the body is stored neatly in the fridge. It is easy to judge Fransisca as a monster, but on the other hand, Pesce has invited us to sympathize with his circumstances, something rarely possessed by a kind of horror that only spit blood and horror without ever really caring about his character.
It may seem strange to say that The Eyes of My Mother is a beautiful movie, pretty beautiful horror? Yes, what else, the reality is she is beautiful. Under the direction of DoP Zach Keperstein, Pesce managed to get beautiful visuals without color, just look at the pictures produced through his wide-angle lens, or how when he displays static moments without losing his haunted impression. While scoring Ariel Loh increasingly thicken aura full of terror as well as sadness and loneliness.
