ENGLISH VERSION
Explaining the Pixar Method with the movie "Ron's gone wrong" (Spoiler Alert).
A few weeks ago I finished a storytelling course, and one of the most interesting classes was to study the method that the Pixar film company has developed to tell their stories. After studying their method, I did a mental recount of the Pixar movies I have seen and it is amazing how they use a very specific method to tell us their stories.
Recently at home we decided to watch the movie "Ron da Error", since I am obsessed with writing and developing stories, narratives and characters, I watched the movie from the eyes of storytelling. Now if you haven't seen this movie, don't read on because I will give you spoilers unless you are like me who has developed a certain immunity to spoilers, then if you prefer run and watch the movie and then continue reading this post.

Let's talk about the Pixar method
Storytelling is a discipline that aims to develop methods to tell stories with the purpose of creating an experience, using various tools and resources that support the construction of a story. Pixar, being one of the largest animated film companies, must have experts in storytelling that is scary, to the point of creating its own method of storytelling, method that bears his name "Pixar Method" and today I will try to explain it using as a main resource the movie "Ron gives error", which is the most recent film I've seen. This method is composed of 12 stages or twelve moments that are spinning the story as a whole, but that we can contemplate separately and discover the threads that drive the plot. Now, spoilers are coming.
The 12 stages of the Pixar model:
- The common world.
- Call to adventure.
- Refusal of the call.
- Encounter with the mentor.
- The journey to a new world.
- The trials, the allies, and the enemies.
- The approach.
- The traumatic ordeal.
- The reward.
- The way back.
- The resurrection of the hero.
- The return with the elixir.

Not all the steps have to be completely fulfilled for the story to be successful, but if I am not mistaken, in this movie we can see them all. Next I will try to explain each stage of the method, alluding to the scene where it can be glimpsed, I'm not going to tell the movie obviously, but you who have already seen it, or so I hope, locate the scene will be a piece of cake.
Stage 1: The Common World:
This first stage is nothing more than the presentation of the story, we are shown a bit of the environment and the context that surrounds it, basically they are the first minutes of the film. It is important at this point to create a connection with the viewer because we create a first empathy, or what I call a bond with the story.
Stage 2: Call to adventure:
At this stage we already have clear the environment of the story and we can deduce more or less how the rhythm of the story will go, but in this second stage of the method it is about developing the character in this case we are shown the everyday life of Barney, and we are shown his way of being. Making way for the third stage.
Stage 3: Refusal of the call:
In this stage arises the conflict that will be the epicenter of the story, in this case it is glimpsed as a desire and need, since socially in the universe of the film, all young people have an innovative device called BeBot, a kind of robot "pet" that can do a thousand things, has integrated a whole complex algorithm for the purpose of getting "friends" to its user. Barney's desire to get a BeBot is inconceivable, as the social pressure and the need to have friends is something that overwhelms him. His father notices his son's discontent with the burden of his existence in front of the unsatisfied desire to own a BeBot, which quickly go to the official store and run into the great inconvenience that to get a device of these must wait 3 months, and he wanted to get one that same night.
The truth is that he manages to acquire one although not in a very lawful way, and it is not that he has stolen or something like that, but one of the carriers provides him with a copy that had previously fallen and had caused a dent. I say no more because I do not intend to tell the movie. The truth is that the next morning, at the foot of the bed Barney had a BeBot. Only it was faulty, and at this point we moved on to the next stage.
Stage 4: Meeting the Mentor
The failures of the BeBot have turned it into a very particular specimen, to the point of making Barney lose his patience, in this stage of the pixar method the main character or characters come across the mentor, which is a figure that comes to give them a lesson, not necessarily a person, sometimes it is a thing, a situation, or the same character can act as a mentor, but in this case, we have a very clear and explicit mentor figure, the little BeBot. The truth is that I feel that at this stage in the development of the story, and not only in this film but as a stage in the development of any story based on this method, it is crucial, because it will mark the future of the story. In the film this moment is one of the most extended and provides the various situations that open the way to the next stage. But before moving on to stage 5, I would like to mention that in the development of a story, meeting the mentor means turning your life around, rethinking things and reflecting on what you are doing, because it motivates you to act. But we are very clear that if we end the stories at this point they turn out to be stories with which we do not feel empathy or any kind of connection.

Stage 5: The journey to a new world.
In this story, our protagonist and his mentor embark on a journey because of the events that have occurred previously, and it seems that entering the forest is the most viable solution. In the storytelling based on the pixar method, this stage is nothing more than a change of direction in the story, and that apparently proposes a different horizon, in the case of this film "Rob gives error" go to the forest as a method of escape, and at this stage announces the advent of a first break in the story, giving way to the next stage.
Stage 6: The trials, the allies and the enemies.
Finding themselves alone in the forest puts them in front of a situation that requires them to face a test that apparently will be the strongest, on the other hand, we are shown the consolidation of the enemy and also of those who support our protagonist. In the development of stories, this moment is extremely interesting since it provides a twist in the plot that outlines a clearer picture of the role of the characters and their development in the story, leading us to the next stage.
Stage 7. The approach:
In the construction of a story following this method, this step seems to placate on an emotional level all the muddle that had been happening, providing a slight calm on the part of the characters who have given life to the story. That is why it is called approximation, because it seems to be the end to the conflicts, but, in reality they are a small calm in front of the major test of the story. It seeks to surprise the viewer and connect with him in the development of each moment. Making way for the eighth stage. In the film, this moment is placed when Barney has been rescued by his friends and his BeBot from the asthma attack he has suffered because of the terrible anguish of having spent the night in the woods in the dark. But his BeBot, with whom he has formed a bond, has been taken from him.
Stage 8. The traumatic ordeal:
It turns out that at this point in the film, our protagonist will try, together with his allies, to recover his Bebot. So he gets into the central servers of the big technology company, and this is where he encounters the biggest challenge, he has two options, and he must choose one quickly. He can either get his Bebot back, which happens to be specially coded because he made it organically without realizing it, or he can deliver his Bebot's code so that all the bebots in the world will replicate what made his unique and make every boy and girl in the world who has a Bebot happy. To get his friend back, or sacrifice his friendship, the bebot was clear in his decision, he is a robot, he has no feelings, the hard part was the emotional part, everything he fought for to be able to find a friend and now he had to let him go. If you saw the movie you know what happened. In story development the traumatic ordeal is the real test, it is what our protagonist must face and what we have prepared him for this moment during the 7 previous moments.
Stage 9. The reward:
The great test past what has achieved is a profound transformation in our protagonist, and assuming that what happened was the best thing that could have happened. And that is why this stage is called reward because emotionally the sacrifice he had to go through has had a meaning. And in the movie we appreciate this moment when he knows that what he did was a greater good by delivering the code of his Bebot.
Stage 10. The Way Back:
In the movie it is literally when he returns back to high school and sees everyone with his Bebots and even though he feels happy that he was able to make others happy. And in the development of a story this step is nothing more than a brief moment where the protagonist is shown observing what he has done, and it is very closely tied to the next stage.
Stage 11. The resurrection of the hero
It is not about putting our protagonist to the test again, but in some way he understands and is congratulated even though congratulations may not always come from the outside for what he has done, in the edification of stories I feel that we can join the previous stage and this one, of course that depends on what you want to express, in this film I felt that they have differentiated it very briefly when Barney arrives at high school, where this time if they greet him and take him into account, not like at the beginning of the film that was literally ignored by everyone. Making way for the last moment of our pixar method of storytelling.
Stage 12. The return of the elixir
An elixir is that which to taste is something incredible and also very beneficial. For our protagonist, friendship turns out to be the elixir he lost when he gave his friend away, and which has been something he has been chasing for years. And already in the last moment of our film when these guys who in the beginning did not seem to be the most friendly with each other, end up being all good friends. And the friendship so pursued is achieved after going through a whole narrative development. In story building, this ultimate moment is the satisfaction of what is so longed for and longed for in the story. And perhaps it is not in the way we are shown at first, but now it has taken on a new meaning.

It has been quite an exercise to be able to locate each moment of the method that Pixar uses to build their stories, I think that doing the storytelling course has made me look at a different aspect in the movies I have seen after finishing the course. I actually said to myself that I would re-watch some Pixar movies that I know I wouldn't mind watching again, just with the intention of spinning the story through the method I just mentioned. I also set out to write a story based on this method, but that's another story.
Now, in order not to stay with just the outline of the method, I want to talk a little about the appreciation I had of the movie "Ron da Error". It seems to me an interesting way to raise the absurd dependence on the various digital devices to socialize, I understand that they are certainly an indispensable tool for our personal and professional development at this time in history, but, around human relationships certainly pose advantages, but also challenges that we must stop to reflect.
It is absurdly laughable the phenomenon of being in a social gathering, and that all those present are absorbed in front of their screens, annulling the otherness of the people who are nearby. And this film shows this human behavior. We forget that sometimes those who are closer have certain ontological importance, with this I do not claim that those who are far away should not matter to us, but sometimes a whatsapp or telegram message, a notification from one of the various RRSS has the importance to break a conversation. The movie got me thinking about that phenomenon and it's something I've always found interesting.
I'm not the biggest Disney fan, but I admit that they can touch on interesting topics of reflection and if we break down some of the themes within the movie and evaluate them individually they can give you a lot to think about. If you have come this far, I hope you have found it interesting, you can leave me in the comments your appreciation about the film, if you knew this pixar model to build stories. I think it is something that can be useful in many aspects.
