I have seen so many comments about this movie that I should not have to go any longer without seeing it and understand why they talked so much about it, some recommending it 100% others saying that it was a very predictable movie, but as there is so much variety between tastes and colors, none of this disturbs or excites me too much, only that there is a certain urgency to see the film and be able to say in my own words and from my point of view what my opinion is.

I don't like to read synopses or do research beforehand because I feel like I'm on the lookout for spoilers that might ruin the film for me. For that reason I won't throw out any spoilers. The truth is that from the start I liked that it was a movie based on a novel by Joe Hill, for those who don't know Joe Hill, metaphysical son of Stephen King, and like him, he writes horror stories. I must confess that I am a fan of Joe Hill's work, therefore, I wanted to appreciate how they have built this film based on a story that is part of the text Ghosts of the 20th Century.

In short I did not find it a bad film, and that I understood that it was not an adaptation as such, but that the film is inspired by the story. This way they cover their backs a little and allow themselves certain liberties in the adaptation of the story to the screen. As always happens with adaptations, the texts are richer in detail and the construction of the characters is more developed. But, understanding that they are two different ways of telling the story, it had to undergo alterations, which at first I found difficult to understand separately.

The film is worth it, maybe my score is not the highest, neither the lowest, I do not know if it is the best horror film of the year 2021, the truth is that watching it is not wasting time, the film has been built with the intention of increasing the feeling of anguish and stress, it certainly achieves it and develops in an interesting and tense way.

Now, particularly for years, I have been curious about the metaphysical aspect of the beliefs of ancient peoples and traditions. And the film, also in the story in which it is inspired, there are very interesting metaphysical elements, there are certain African cultures that have very particular beliefs regarding death and the afterlife that in the film you can appreciate certain outlines, but I do not know if the author and the screenwriters did it taking that into account or it is simply an association that I make on my own.

There are elements that the film shows in isolation that make some sense, but something that I liked is that each seemingly isolated factor had a relationship as a whole in the outcome of the story. A kind of narrative staircase, each step is a support, but in retrospect each step was necessary to climb to the next level. That's a detail that is appreciated.

Thinking about it, I have not said why it is called black phone, certainly an object is not the protagonist of the film, but it is one of the elements that has more relevance in the development of the story. On the one hand, it is a link used by the characters, and of course, you're probably thinking that every phone is a link, because it is a device through which we communicate. It is true, but in this case, communication is somewhat disturbing and paradigmatic. And it is the communication around the black telephone that gives the story the relevance for the story to develop.

If you are encouraged to see the film in case you haven't seen it yet, don't raise your expectations too high, let yourself be surprised, there will surely be a couple of scenes that will amaze you, that's for sure. And enjoy a good moment of tension.

Hablemos de la película “El Teléfono Negro"

He visto tantos comentarios alrededor de esta película que ya no debía pasar más tiempo sin verla y poder entender por qué hablaban tanto de ella, unos recomendándola 100% otros afirmando que era una película muy predecible, pero como entre gustos y colores hay tanta variedad, nada de esto me perturba o emociona demasiado, solo que impera cierta urgencia para ver el film y poder decir con mis propias palabras y desde mi punto de vista cuál es mi opinión.

No me gusta leer las sinopsis o investigar de manera previa porque siento que es estar al acecho de algún spoilers que pueda arruinarme la película. Por esa razón no arrojaré ningún tipo de spoilers. Lo cierto es que de entrada me gustó que era una película basada en una novela de Joe Hill, para quien no conoce a Joe Hill, metafísico hijo de Stephen King, y como esté, escribe historias de terror. Debo confesar que soy un fan del trabajo de Joe Hill, por lo tanto, quería apreciar como han construido esta película basándose en un relato que forma parte del texto Fantasmas del siglo XX.

En pocas palabras no me pareció una mala película, y que entendí que no fue una adaptación como tal, sino que la película está inspirada en el relato. Así se cubren un poco las espaldas y permitirse ciertas libertades en la adaptación del relato a la pantalla. Como siempre ocurre con las adaptaciones, los textos son más ricos en detalles y la construcción de los personajes es más desarrollada. Pero, entendiendo que son dos modos diferentes de contar la historia, tenía que sufrir alteraciones, que en principio me costó entenderlas por separado.

La película vale la pena, quizá mi puntuación no es la más elevada, tampoco la más baja, no sé si sea la mejor película de terror del año 2021, lo cierto es que verla no es perder el tiempo, la película ha sido construida con la intención de ir incrementando la sensación de angustia y el estrés, ciertamente lo va consiguiendo y se va desarrollando de un modo interesante y tenso.

Ahora bien, particularmente durante años, he sido un curioso en el aspecto metafísico de las creencias de pueblos y tradiciones antiguas. Y la película, también en el relato en el que está inspirado, hay elementos metafísicos muy interesantes, hay ciertas culturas africanas que tienen creencias muy particulares con respecto a la muerte y al más allá que en la película se pueden apreciar ciertos esbozos, más no sé si el autor y los guionistas lo harían teniendo eso en cuenta o simplemente es una asociación que yo hago por mi cuenta.

Hay elementos que la película van mostrando de manera aislada que tienen cierto sentido, pero algo que me gustó es que cada factor aparentemente aislado tuvo una relación en conjunto en el desenlace de la historia. Una especie de escalera narrativa, cada escalón es un apoyo, pero mirado en retrospectiva cada escalón has sido necesario para poder subir al siguiente nivel. Eso es un detalle que se aprecia.

Pensándolo bien, no he dicho por qué se llama teléfono negro, ciertamente un objeto no es el protagonista de la película, pero es uno de los elementos que más relevancia posee en el desarrollo de la historia. Por un lado, es un vínculo que utilizan los personajes, y claro, seguro estarás pensando que todo teléfono es vínculo, un porque es un aparato por el cual nos comunicamos. Es cierto, pero en este caso, la comunicación resulta algo inquietante y paradigmática. Y resulta ser la comunicación en torno al teléfono negro lo que dota al relato la relevancia para que la historia se desarrolle.

Si de ánimas a ver la película en el caso de que no la hayas visto aun, no eleves demasiado tus expectativas, déjate sorprender, seguro habrá un par de escenas que te asombraran, eso si es seguro. Y disfruta de un buen momento de tensión.
