While i was curating yesterday night, i had forgotten that my TV was on. A movie just started and i caught myself listening to some of the lines. Those lines were quite funny so i got interested in that movie and because i didn't want to bother myself with long commercials in-between, i simply downloaded it.
Generic Info
This is a comedy/drama film that came out in 2016. It is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and the writers are Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver. There are many, and i mean many stars in this show, like Ice Cube, Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson, Nicki Minaj and Cedric the Entertainer.
Now note that this movie has 2 prequels, the first one aired during 2002 and the second one during 2004. 12 years later, if my maths are correct, the movie i am gonna review came out. So i would suggest that before watching this movie you better watch the other 2.
Not that it's a must to watch it, you won't miss anything but i think it's better because you will come closer with all the actors there and that will uplift your whole movie experience. But that's my humble experience.
Plot
After more than 10 years the "gang" is all back together in Calvin's Barbershop (Ice Cube). Some things have changed, both in the whole area as well as in the Barbershop. Regarding the area, the criminality rate has reached an all-time high due to the gang wars.
As a result, the Barbershop had to make some changes as well in order to attract more clients and generate money. It was supposed to be male-dominated but now it's half men, half women which gives a different vibe and quite some new jokes.
At the same time, Calvin has a son in school and he wants the best for him, even if that means selling the shop and moving to a more safe area. His son is also approached by gangsters and he is also a teen so you can say he is quite rebellious with his family.
Soon enough everyone in the barbershop will think of a new idea in order to protect their area. That is to make a peace treaty for the weekend between the rival gangs and in exchange, they will provide their barbershop services for free.
Will they succeed?
What Will happen with Calvin's Son?
What I Liked and What I Didn't
Now let's get down to business, starting with what i like. The first thing i particularly like is the sense of humor these guys have. Even though due,to the times we live in, they don't make the same jokes as in the previous movies they still manage to keep it fun.
Especially, Cedric the Entertainer is extremely funny, i have to admit it. Also, it's really amazing that they gathered all the cast once again after so many years. That alone, especially for the fans is really exciting.
Now what i didn't like is that they minimized the jokes because they tried to give the movie a more serious vibe. In fact, it has quite the emotional depth and many people that are living in cities like this with criminality levels that high can easily relate.
Although it's good that they tried to approach this movie like this i can't help but liking it more with tons of funny jokes. When you make a comedy try to have more of that element in it otherwise change the genre. Especially, when you do something big as creating another movie after so many years with that amazing cast, you have to keep it real and stay true!
All in all, you will have fun watching it, you will have more fun watching the other 2 but still, there are a lot of different options for you to watch if you are bored. Except if you are like me that has watched almost everything :P
