BLACK LIGHTNING A RETIRED SUPERHERO (Series Review)

Review by @filotasriza3 · 3078d · of Black Lightning

It's been a long since i reviewed another series but literally i haven't watched any till now... The time had final come and yesterday i watched the new TV series of Netflix based on the Dc comic Black Lightning.

Let's dive into the details!

Useful info

As i already mentioned Black Lightning is a new Tv series of Netflix based on the popular Dc comic and will consist of 13 episodes with the first one being already out by January 17 and the next one is coming out tomorrow at January 24. The creators are Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil with their most famous direction and writing job being a series called Being Mary Jane that started from 2013 and continue till now.

The main character and superhero behind Black Lightning is the 48 years old actor Cress Williams that has played in a bunch of movies and series (like law and order, Grey's anatomy, prison break) and fun fact he is 1.93 m tall :P

Plot

So we are all used to young superheroes that finding out their new super powers all of sudden and then we watch through their whole start up journey till they become the heroes we all know or have heard. This time we have a retired hero that knows what he is capable of and how to use his power ( sort of :p ). In the fight scenes he is in, you can clearly understand that he has experience and that mere thugs are easy dealt.

The story is set after a 9 year hiatus of Jefferson Pierce being the superhero and now works as principal of a prestigious school and he believe he has saved more lives currently than being Black Lightning. As you may guess like in Luke Cage the whole problem is a neighborhood full of crime, drugs, guns, thugs and crime lords.

Soon problems occur and he the only way to solve them is by suit up again and use his powers!

You though that was gonna be the end? guess again!

What I Like

So what i mentioned above is what happens in general. If we wanna take it a bit more deeply, the whole show has the atmosphere of racism towards blacks all around as well as it tries to show Jefferson Pierce as a father and a father that can do anything about his children and his relation with them. The reason why he stopped being a hero is because a night he came back home almost dead, his wife and little child saw him in that state and ask him to never do it again ( and divorced him :P) so for the sake of his family he had to change.

At the same time as his 2 daughters are grown ups now, the one is 20+ and the other one is in his school, he had to face the difficulties of teen's behavior and have to do something about getting back his wife. Also his older daughter will realize she has powers too so that would be another issue for Dad. Finally, there is an already established nemesis villain there name Tobias.

If you watch it or have watched it tell me what you think of it in the comments and have a good day or night everyone!

I really like how they approached Black Lightning. Coming from the usual origin story, it's refreshing how we're presented with a seasoned veteran. I do hope that they gloss over his kids after a few seasons and move directly to Static Shock. I feel like a mentor-apprentice relationship with a troubled youth could do this show good. But, it's already off to a great start anyway! At first I thought this was just DC's answer to Luke Cage, but it's so much more. Definitely interested in seeing where they go with the character.

I haven't followed any of the DC series so far. It's not just because I'm a Marvel fan but mainly because I'm so behind many other Netflix series like ALL seasons of Black Mirror, Penny Dreadful, Orphan Black, and a load of documentaries!

Trailer seems really cool though. Based on your review and synopsis of the show, it does have a very Luke Cage theme going on but seems like it might have a few more layers to the characters and a lot more action. Luke Cage was good but it was a bit slow at times for me personally. Still enjoyed it though!

Anyways, great review! Will definitely check it out when I can!
