Boardwalk Empire Season 1 Review

i was searching for a new crime/gangster series to see cause i have seen mostly everything, even documentaries and i couldn't find any. Then a friend told me about Boardwalk Empire, a series that is a bit old (2010-2014), i checked a trailer, saw the actors that play in, as well as the concept, and of course i dived in.

In 2 days i have watched the first season and half of the second one, so as you can see i really like that show. Maybe it has also something to do with Steve Buscemi an actor i really like. He has played in so many movies!

General info

Boardwalk Empire is a show with 5 seasons that started out in 2010 and ended in 2014. Each season has 12 episodes which are 55 minutes long. As i said above the show is considered a crime/gangster and you can add the history tag as well.

The reason for the history tag is because the show is based on real events and actual people which is something that i like as well. The stars of the show are Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Stephen Graham among others. The creator of the show is Terence Winter who you might also know from The Sopranos and the wolf of wall street!

Plot

This show takes place in Atlantic City just a couple of hours before Prohibition. Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi) is a political boss in the area but behind the scenes, he is also a crime boss. While he seems that he is pro Prohibition he is actually a broker in the now illegal booze business.

At the same time, everyone is paying him a cut in the town, and even though the town has a mayor, Nucky is way above him. Meanwhile, Nucky's protege Jimmy Darmody comes back in town as a veteran after World War 1.

A lot is going on in this show, as we get to see how Nucky has and is building his empire and how smart he is. To keep the power though isn't that simple and Nucky has to overcome many enemies from all across America. He will have to face and forge relations with many well-known crime bosses and politicians of that era.

What I Like and What I Didn't

Once again i really don't have a lot of negatives to say. The plot is amazing as well as the setup and even the music. It's also really amazing to see a write-up like that, that brings all those big names together (politicians and crime bosses) included.

The acting is amazing, the show doesn't make you bored at all and there is constant character development. To add to that, Nucky may be the star of the show but we also get to see different characters and their own course of action. Characters like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano that each one of them could even have his own series.

In shows like this one i really like to see the ties that these "important" people had. It's amazing to see that most of the higher-ups were corrupted and didn't care for anything other than their own sake.

The only thing that i have to say as a negative is nudity. It's not that i don't like all those nude scenes but i think a lot of them are completely unecessary. Maybe they try to capture more audience that way who knows? I don't think that they need that to attract more people to the show or at least that's what i hope.

If you like that kind of genre then this show is a must-watch. Listen to a guy that saw 18 episodes in 2 days :P
