It was the night of November 17, 1901, when the military police of the government of the then president Porfirio Diaz broke into a party where 41 personalities of the aristocracy of the time were participating, this event would deeply mark Mexican society, to the point that even today the number 41 is still associated with male homosexuality.
The unfortunate ones, it is believed, were subjected to all kinds of humiliations in spite of the fact that in Mexico homosexuality has never been punishable by law. Some were able to pay for their freedom, others were sent to the trenches of the Caste War in the southern state of Yucatan. The identity of its protagonists was never revealed, until a lawyer named Juan Carlos Harris investigated the background of this story and discovered the identity of 7 of the members of the "Dance of the 41 faggots".
I a passionate of modern history had read about this fact a few years before, so when I saw the trailer of Alfonso Herrera's new film, I couldn't help but feel instantly attracted. However I had to wait a few months for the streaming service Netflix, to release this film.

Transcurrรญa la noche del 17 de Noviembre de 1901, cuando la policรญa militar del gobierno del entonces presidente Porfirio Dรญaz irrumpiรณ en una fiesta donde participaban 41 personalidades de la aristocracia de la รฉpoca, este hecho marcarรญa profundamente a la sociedad mexicana, hasta el punto de que todavรญa actualmente se asocia el numero 41 a la homosexualidad masculina.
Los infortunados se creen, fueron sometidos a todo tipo de vejaciones a pesar de que en Mรฉxico la homosexualidad nunca ha estado penada por las leyes. Algunos pudieron pagar por su libertad, otros fueron enviados a las trincheras de la Guerra de las Castas en el estado de Yucatรกn al sur del paรญs. Nunca se desvelรณ la identidad de sus protagonistas, hasta que un abogado llamado Juan Carlos Harris investigรณ el trasfondo de esta historia y descubriรณ la identidad de 7 de los integrantes del โBaile de los 41 mariconesโ.
Yo un apasionado de la historia moderna habรญa leรญdo acerca de este hecho unos aรฑos antes, por eso cuando vi el trรกiler de la nueva pelรญcula de Alfonso Herrera, no pude evitar sentirme instantรกneamente atraรญdo. Sin embargo tuve que esperar unos meses para que el servicio de streaming Netflix, estrenara esta pelรญcula.

Dance of the 41 is a Mexican film released in November 2020 was a co-production between Mexico and Brazil financed by Canana Films, El Estudio and Bananeira Filmes. It was directed by David Pablos, written by Monika Revilla and has a running time of approximately 1 hour and 34 minutes. It stars Alfonso Herrera, Emiliano Zurita, Mabel Cadena, Fernando Becerril, Paulina รlvarez Muรฑoz, Alvaro Guerrero and Eugenio Bartilotti.
The film is set in the early twentieth century based on a Mexican historical event as interesting and peculiar as the dance of the 41, the photography was in charge of Carolina Costa who gave a lot of color and beautiful shots to the viewer, while the music was in the hands of Carolina Costa.

Ignacio de la Torre (Alfonso Herrera) is married to Amada Diaz (Mabel Cadena) daughter of the president of Mexico Porfirio Diaz (Fernando Becerril). Ignacio wants to be his father-in-law's political heir and will try to please him in everything, even marrying against his own homosexual desires. Ignacio is a deputy, aspiring to the governorship of the state of Mexico and it is in his office that he will meet the man who would become the love of his life Evaristo Rivas or EVA (Emiliano Zurita) whom he introduces in a clandestine house where homosexuals of the Mexican aristocracy of the time and others less fortunate flaunt their sexual desires without taboos.
The wife, angry at Ignacio's lack of sexual desire, begins to investigate the reasons why her husband treats her so coldly, and finds the correspondence between the two men. Amada, full of rage, accuses Ignacio to her father, who begins to investigate him, finding the whereabouts of the house of the dance of the 42, making a raid and imprisoning all of its members except his son-in-law, whom he freed from the scandal that he would cause to his own government.

Ignacio quiere ser el heredero polรญtico de su suegro y para eso tratara de complacerlo en todo, incluso casandose en contra de sus propios deseos homosexuales. Ignacio es diputado, aspirante a la gobernaciรณn del estado de Mรฉxico es en su oficina que conocerรก al que llegarรญa a ser el amor de su vida Evaristo Rivas o EVA (Emiliano Zurita) a quien introduce en una casa clandestina donde los homosexuales de la aristocracia mexicana de la รฉpoca y otros menos afortunados hacen gala de sus deseo sexuales sin tabรบes.
La esposa enojada por la falta del deseo sexual de Ignacio, comenzara a investigar acerca de las causas por las cuales su esposo la trata con tanta frialdad, encontrรกndose con la correspondencia que mantenรญan ambos hombres. Amada llena de rabia acusa a Ignacio con su padre quien lo comienza investigar dando con el paradero de la casa del baile de los 42, haciendo una redada y metiendo preso a la totalidad de sus integrantes excepto a su yerno a quien librรณ del escรกndalo que causarรญa a su propio gobierno.

The story of the Dance of the 41 remains the current reality of hundreds of gay people who are vexed for their sexual desires. The film manages to bring sex to the big screen in a way that I particularly had never seen on screen before, balancing with perfect complexity issues such as homophobia, machismo and misogyny. The director is not afraid to enter the realm of the vulgar, but it never feels that way all the sex scenes and nudity are connected to the rest of the story and the message he wanted to convey. All of these ingredients blend together to create a memorable love story.
The clandestine house where a group of 42 men practically formed a Homosexual Lodge was a safe place where everyone could enjoy the desires that because of society they had to repress. This house was not only used for orgies but also served as an entertainment center where banquets and theatrical plays were held. It also showcased the desires of those men to fight gender roles by dressing up as women to mock their own vulnerabilities.

La historia de El baile de los 41 sigue siendo la realidad actual de cientos de personas homosexuales que son vejadas por sus deseos sexuales. La pelรญcula logra llevar a la gran pantalla el sexo de una forma que yo particularmente nunca habรญa visto en pantalla, equilibrando con una perfecta complejidad temas como la homofobia, el machismo y la misoginia. El director no teme a entrar en el terreno de lo vulgar, pero nunca se siente asรญ todas las escenas de sexo y desnudos estรกn conectados con el resto de la historia y el mensaje que querรญa transmitir. Todos estos ingredientes se mezclan para crear una historia de amor memorable.
La casa clandestina donde un grupo de 42 hombres formaban prรกcticamente una Logia Homosexual era un sitio seguro donde todos podรญan disfrutar de los deseos que por culpa de la sociedad tenรญan que reprimir. Esta casa no solamente era usada para hacer orgias sino que tambiรฉn fungรญa como centro de entretenimiento y en ellas se realizaban banquetes y obras teatrales. Tambiรฉn se exhibรญan los deseos de aquellos hombres de luchar contra los roles de gรฉnero vistiรฉndose de mujeres para burlarse de sus propias vulnerabilidades.
I have no problems with any of the performances the casting lived up to my expectations. The pairing of Alfonso Herrera and Emiliano Zurita is simply subliminal, the chemistry between the two actors is magical and at times you forget you are in a movie. The kissing and sex scenes were so real and so timely that you get to enjoy a feeling of intimacy that is out of this world.
Mabel Cadena in the character of Amada is brilliant so much so that you will begin to hate her as the movie unfolds. Amada may be the villain of this love story, but she is also a victim of circumstance, and I loved that the film did not shy away from touching on these issues.
The locations where the shots of this masterpiece were filmed are spectacular with Mexico City and Guadalajara as the main references.
No tengo problemas con ninguna de las actuaciones el casting estuvo a la altura de mis expectativas. La pareja formada por Alfonso herrera y Emiliano Zurita simplemente es subliminal, la quรญmica entre 2 actores es mรกgica y por momentos te olvidas que estas ante una pelรญcula. Los besos y las escenas de sexo fueron tan reales y tan oportunos que llegas a disfrutar de un sentimiento de intimidad que esta fuera de este mundo.
Mabel Cadena en el personaje de Amada es brillante tanto que comenzaras a odiarla conforme se desarrolla la pelรญcula. Amada puede ser la villana de esta historia de amor, pero tambiรฉn es vรญctima de las circunstancias, y me encantรณ que la pelรญcula no evitara tocar estos temas.
Las locaciones donde fueron grabadas las tomas de esta pieza maestra son espectaculares teniendo la Ciudad de Mรฉxico y Guadalajara como principales referencias.
Dance of the 41 was the first time that homosexuals were portrayed in Mexico, so it seems appropriate to make visible these people that history had erased by orders of the then president Porfirio Diaz. Most of the members of this lodge met a sinister fate despite the fact that it is not a crime to be homosexual, but such moving stories serve to educate viewers.
Although the historical events on which this story is based seem distant in time, they are still so contemporary that you can't help but identify with all the characters. Although the writer took many literary licenses, the story is still true even though Ignacio de la Torre's participation in this event was never proven.
El Baile de los 41 fue la primera vez que los homosexuales fueron retratados en Mรฉxico, asรญ que me parece oportuno visibilizar a estas personas que la historia habรญa borrado por รณrdenes del entonces presidente Porfirio Dรญaz. La mayorรญa de los integrantes de esta logia tuvieron un destino siniestro a pesar de que no es delito ser homosexual, pero este tipo de historias tan conmovedoras sirven para educar a los espectadores.
Aunque los hechos histรณricos en los que se basa esta historia parecen lejanos en el tiempo, siguen siendo tan contemporรกneos que no puedes evitar sentirte identificado con todos los personajes. A pesar de que el escritor tuvo muchas licencias literarias la historia no deja de ser real aunque nunca se comprobรณ la participaciรณn de Ignacio de la Torre en este hecho.
At the end of the story Amada tells Ignacio that Evaristo has died in battle and the film ends quickly, melancholy and without warning. The story is entertaining from beginning to end and everything unfolds in its time, the script is agile and when you finish watching the movie you realize how much you enjoyed it.
I wish you could enjoy it as much as I did, but please let me know what you thought of it below. My score is 9/10.
Al final de la historia Amada le cuenta a Ignacio que Evaristo ha muerto en batalla y la pelรญcula termina asรญ rauda, melancรณlica y sin previo aviso. La historia es entretenida de principio a fin y todo se desarrolla en su momento, el guion es รกgil y cuando ya acabas de ver la pelรญcula te das cuenta de lo mucho que la disfrutaste.
Me gustarรญa que pudieran disfrutarla tanto como yo lo hice, eso sรญ me comentan que tal les pareciรณ aquรญ abajo. Mi puntuaciรณn es de 9/10.
