Hello Hivers! I hope you are well, today I wanted to talk about a movie I watched earlier this year. I had just finished watching another Korean film when Netflix recommended this piece to me, which is why I decided to watch the preview posted on this platform. I was struck by the fact that it was an LGTBIQ+ film made in Taiwan, I always thought that in that country as in almost all of Asia homosexuality was taboo.
Taiwan is a small Southeast Asian island that has been in conflict with mainland China for many years. Both countries dispute each other's territory, one is recognized and the other is diplomatically encircled, one is a communist dictatorship and the other nation lives in democracy. At the beginning China was a single country but at the end of World War II there was a civil war that ended with the government exiled in Taiwan with a small part of the Chinese population.
In 1949 the government of the island dictated the Martial Law that was used to repress the population and attempt against individual liberties, this law was abolished in 1987, the year in which the movie is set. But I won't tell you more and let's discover more about this touching story.

Hola Hivers!

The film begins with the end of the martial law which was officially repealed in Taiwan in 1987, but the directors of the new school of A-han (Edward Chen) don't want to let go of the old regime. That doesn't matter much as our protagonists are about to graduate. At the beginning we see A-han Bloodied, full of rage and crying, talking openly with the school's priest who is also the music teacher, Father Oliver (Fabio Grangeon) who is the only person A-han can truly trust. Right there is a flashback to the previous year, when A-han, a recent transfer, approaches Birdy (Jing-Hua Tseng) at a swimming pool they share a kind of mutual recognition that will be more awkward than anything else. Birdy manages to keep his homosexuality a secret but he is outspoken and rebellious, so he is teased, bullied and at one point suffers violence when he is hit with a switch by the cruel headmaster of the school that seems to be more like a prison, as this happens A-han watches the crude scene dumbfounded.
They soon cause some trouble together: A-han watches as Birdy urinates on Father Oliver's car window, then they elope on a bus bound for Taipei the capital of Taiwan, where they pretend to mourn the late President Chiang and watch as the authorities crack down on a protester who carries a banner that reads "homosexuality is not a disease".
As time passes, the school that once accepted only boys begins to accept girls, but the orders are to keep them separate from the boys. Birdy's rebellion continues, but his protest evolves into a personal one, a struggle between curing and distancing himself from homosexuality or building a facade to defend himself from his haters keeps him immersed in serious emotional problems that lead him to convince Banban (Mimi Shao) a very cute girl to be his girlfriend, without caring anything about A-han's feelings, who desperately seeks answers to the erratic behavior of his beloved. Will these two teenagers finally manage to be happy? Will they manage to overcome the prejudices of an era marked by homophobia? You will discover all this and much more at the end of this exciting love story.

Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu turned his youthful anecdotes into a memorable film that so far is the highest grossing film he needed to be confined to last year, for his incredible early response to the Coovid-19 pandemic. The story is sustained by the tale of the director's first love who subtly captures the feelings at a time when being gay was a crime in his country.
Liu is a filmmaker of great visual quality who manages to pull off timeline twists effortlessly and with great wit. He nurtures a bittersweet tone, establishes a tactile sense of time and place, and sharply explores the connection between religion and sexuality through images that evoke much nostalgia. One senses that Liu was aiming for poignant drama, but he almost succeeds, as at times the internal suffering of the two protagonists renders the film meaningless. At times it manages to have moments of connection but because the piece is so long at times you lose interest in it.
I managed to enjoy the quiet scenes more than the violence expressed with little subtlety - for example, when A-han and Birdy break into the private screening room of a movie theater - they are much more functional scenes than the one showing the protagonists suffering in excess, it is good to know that the film is filled with many such scenes.
At times it seems to evoke the spirit of great pieces of LGBTIQ+ cinema it has a lot of Call me by Your Name but also Moonlight or Secret on the Mountain that are completely perceived.

My favorite scene happens while the police try to suppress the protest of a man who with a sign expresses many truths, this character is played by Chi Chia-wei, a Taiwanese activist who has been fighting for more than 30 years for LGBTIQ+ rights the cameo of this activist manages to move the guts of the most skeptical viewer.
Towards the end of the film you realize that it's not just any teen drama, in fact I don't think that's the right label to define Your Name Engraved Herein, I think it's more accurate to say that it's a film by a director who wanted to capture how he sees his first love from his perspective as an adult. At the very end, the main characters meet again as adults to say their last goodbye to the character of the father Oliver, a Canadian who particularly stole my heart with his performance.
Although the film does not deal much with the subject, it is obvious that Father Oliver suffered in his adolescence for being gay. I found that story immersed in the story very interesting, much more than the open ending where the protagonists walk the streets of the new world remembering those times of youth.
A lot of nostalgia arises while this is happening, definitely the ending was one of the best things that happened to me this year. I managed to enjoy that narrative arc and understand what the director wanted to convey. What Netflix left me owing was the dubbing, at the moment you can only find the original subtitled version, I'm not saying it was necessary, I'm a fan of listening to the content I see in its original language and this was the first production made in Taiwan that I have seen so far and it has left me with a good taste in my mouth.
Before I end I just hope you get to see this film which I think is loaded with many moments worth seeing beyond the fact that it has been critically acclaimed worldwide. The only review that matters at the end of the day is that of the audience and I was hooked. I give this masterpiece a 9.5/10.
