Retro Review - X-Men: Mutant Academy 2

Review by @freddbrito · 3118d · of X-Men: Mutant Academy

When my parents gave me Playstation 1 (already a few years ago), two of the first games I had was: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the other is the game that I will review next. This was the first game of fights I played on the Playstation 1 and therefore I keep it in my memory, besides having part of my favorite characters from the world of comics.

The Retro Review is from that classic game of fights of the Marvel characters: X-Men: Mutant Academy 2.

Being one of the first games I played when I had my Playstation 1, I found it graphically spectacular, I had never seen a game so graphically so good and I was really excited to be able to play with some of my favorite characters in 3D.

I currently have another vision about this game in terms of graphics, it's been several years since I played it for the last time, but even though it's a pretty old game, X-Men Mutant Academy 2 has not aged as badly as others games of the same generation, in it you can see models of characters very well achieved and with the right proportions, each of the characters with which we can play, have their own personality, in addition to having quite similar to their counterparts in the comic and the animated series of 90's.

Although the background of the scenarios where we fought the battles are in 2D, they were made in such a way that they seem as if the characters were behind a fully 3D background and that really adds points in this great game, another point to stand out is the special powers of the characters, each one has a special one where the effects of the animations, lights and powers stand out for a lot.

As is the custom of Playstation 1, all the characters present polygonal models, however they are modeled very good, capable of having an animation that despite not being totally fluid is enough to be a pretty decent fighting game, In addition, the developers fully respected the design of the characters with respect to the comic, one could say that it is a pretty good copy with respect to the work in which it is inspired.

X-Men Mutant Academy 2 has a number of melodies that accompany us in every battle we have, they are varied and very much in keeping with the world of superheroes in the of Marvel Universe, however many times these melodies can not be appreciated in great, due to the sound effects of each hit, kick or power, despite this, many of the melodies that we can find are quite energetic and contribute a lot to this game of fights. As for the sound effects are well elaborated and complement each other very well in each action that the character performs.

Like any good fighting game, its gameplay must have the greatest focus at the time of development, therefore it is the most worked aspect in any game that belongs to the fighting games genre. In the case of X-Men Mutant Academy 2, has a fairly simple gameplay, we learn to use each character we have at our disposal with simple and intuitive controls, this game gives us an experience when playing fairly good.

At the same time, we can play with some of our favorite characters belonging to the marvel universe, although specifically with the X-Men. Characters ranging from Wolverine, Jean Grey and to the very Magneto. Each of these characters have their own special abilities and movements, of which according to our experience at the time we are playing, we will choose which of them suits us to play and we are better according to our abilities.

The gameplay is fast, that is, the battle time is fast, some characters have the ability to move faster than others and therefore apply better combos to our enemies, while others are slower, but have greater protection, they have a better defense against certain attacks. X-Men Mutant Academy 2 has very few game modes, so it will not take long to finish it, but we have a training mode that will help us choose the character that is most to our liking, also to be able to learn the combos that we need in each fight. And despite not being an extremely difficult game, its difficulty curve is good, but it does not fall into the easy, it has an intermediate term, although of course it always depends on our abilities.

Being this one of the first games I played in Playstation 1, it is impossible not to remember him every time I see my playstation 1 lying there on the shelf (my Playstation 1 is no longer useful), however I believe that if I play it today I may not like it, it has been many years and with respect to its gameplay I think it is a little outdated, that's why I would prefer not to play it and let nostalgia keep it as it was a game that I spent many hours and have a good time.

Cool perspective. I think it looks pretty good for the era, but you're probably wise not to disturb the nostalgia you have by playing it now.
