Imagínate que puedas dividir tu memoria por 8 horas al día. Entras a trabajar y tu “memoria de tu vida personal” desaparece y entra tu “memoria de trabajo”. Así es la premisa de Severance, una serie que descubrí hace un par de semanas que me llamo mucho la atención, ya que es como un capítulo de Black Mirror pero estirado durante toda una temporada de 9 capítulos. Una serie que me engancho desde el primer capítulo, aunque su inicio sea un poco lento, sin embargo, es una serie que te va a cautivar si te gustan este tipo de series contemplativas y que hay mucho misterio detrás.
Severance se centra en Mark, el cual vive en un planeta tierra un poco distinto, ya que existe una empresa llamada “Lumon”, la cual su condición para poder trabajar ahí es que “dividas tu conciencia” o tu memoria, es decir. En una sola persona existen dos conciencias, la conciencia de tu vida personal, la que ocupa gran parte de las horas de tu día a día y luego está la conciencia del trabajo, la cual ocupa las horas que duren la jornada de trabajo. Ninguna de las dos conciencias sabe qué hace la otra, es decir, la conciencia que vive la vida personal no sabe qué hace su version “trabajadora” y viceversa, de tal forma que son prácticamente dos personas totalmente diferentes habitando un solo cuerpo, lo que da a este serie un conjunto de posibilidades muy interesantes para la historia. Incluso nosotros como espectador no sabemos realmente que hace esta empresa, ya que además de ser una empresa muy rara a nivel de estructura, ya que es prácticamente un laberinto, hecho de tal manera que otros departamentos dentro de la empresa se les haga muy difícil encontrarse, es que también en la forma en cómo trabajan es un misterio.
Las posibilidades que tiene esta serie a futuro son enormes, los giros de trama que ocurren y van a ocurrir son de esas cosas que me tienen en vela por la espera de la segunda temporada, ya que el final de la primera te deja no solo con uno, sino con 4 cliffhanger al mismo tiempo que me dejo con muchas ganas de que estrenen en lo más pronto posible ya segunda temporada.
No soy experto en cine, pero esta serie a nivel cinematográfico es hermoso, hay mucha simetría y pulcritud, lo que añadido al tema de la división de la conciencia, hace que veamos esta empresa como algo que esconde mucho más de lo que aparenta. Entre a ver esta serie totalmente a ciegas, tan solo sabía quién era el protagonista principal y un poco de la trama, por lo que me sorprendió mucho ver a actores como: Patricia Arquette, John Turturro y al que más sorprendió de ver en esta serie fue al mismísimo Christopher Walken. Pero también me sorprendió ver a Bean Stiller, como el director de la mayoría de los capítulos, creo que haber contado 6 capítulos siendo dirigidos por él. La serie plantea muchas cosas como el existencialismo, la explotación laboral, como afrontar la pérdida de un ser querido entre otras cosas.
Y especialmente uno de los aspectos principales es cómo afrontar la perdida de una persona, en el caso de nuestro protagonista principal: Mark, al haber muerto su esposa, intento de diversas maneras como afrontar esa muerte, sin embargo ninguna funcionaba, sino es hasta que empezó a trabajar en Lumon, el cual debido a esa separación, al menos por 8 horas al día (o lo que dure su jordana laboral), va a poder “olvidarla” ya que al ser una conciencia totalmente diferente, no tiene por qué estar pensando en algo tan triste y trágico como la muerte.
Es bastante interesante como se plantea el argumento de esta serie, ya que la version “trabajadora” de la persona, vive solo para trabajar, al desconectarse y volverse a conectar, la parte trabajadora solo ve eso, el trabajo, por lo que poco a poco esa version “trabajadora”, va sucumbiendo ante la interrogante de saber que hay fuera de la empresa, como es su version fuera del trabajo, que hace, como vive, con quien vive, son muchas las incógnitas que atraviesa esa parte de la conciencia. Al igual de la incógnita de saber qué hace realmente la empresa Lumon, ya que a lo largo de los capítulos se ve que hay un control exagerado y muy raro ante sus trabajadores, además de encontrar cosas muy raras en los pasillos de esta empresa.
Los otros personajes también plantean su propia incógnita hacia el espectador (nosotros como espectador de la serie), ya que al igual que Mark, el protagonista principal, cada personaje aporta su grano de arena en el desarrollo de la serie y en los eventos que van a lograr desvelar lo que realmente sucede en este lugar. En fin, Severance es de las mejores series que he visto este año, quizás para muchas personas al inicio pueda ser un poco lenta en desarrollo, aunque personalmente para mi no lo fue, pero entiendo si para alguna persona así lo perciba, sin embargo, si logras superar ese aspecto “negativo” en el inicio, te vas a encontrar una serie muy buena y sumamente interesante.

Severance focuses on Mark, who lives on a slightly different planet earth, since there is a company called "Lumon", which his condition to be able to work there is that you "divide your consciousness" or your memory, that is to say. In a single person there are two consciousnesses, the consciousness of your personal life, which occupies a large part of the hours of your daily life, and then there is the consciousness of work, which occupies the hours of the working day. Neither of the two consciousnesses knows what the other is doing, that is, the consciousness that lives the personal life does not know what its "working" version is doing and vice versa, so that they are practically two totally different people inhabiting a single body, which gives this series a very interesting set of possibilities for the story. Even we as viewers don't really know what this company does, since besides being a very strange company in terms of structure, since it is practically a labyrinth, made in such a way that other departments within the company are very difficult to find, it is also a mystery in the way they work.
The possibilities that this series has for the future are enormous, the plot twists that occur and will occur are one of those things that keep me awake waiting for the second season, since the end of the first leaves you with not only one, but with 4 cliffhangers at the same time that left me eager for the premiere of the second season as soon as possible.
I am not an expert in cinema, but this series is beautiful cinematographically, there is a lot of symmetry and neatness, which added to the theme of the division of consciousness, makes us see this company as something that hides much more than it appears. I went into watching this series totally blind, I only knew who the main character was and a little of the plot, so I was very surprised to see actors like: Patricia Arquette, John Turturro and the one I was most surprised to see in this series was Christopher Walken himself. But I was also surprised to see Bean Stiller, as the director of most of the chapters, I think I counted 6 chapters being directed by him. The series raises many things such as existentialism, labor exploitation, how to cope with the loss of a loved one among other things.
And especially one of the main aspects is how to deal with the loss of a person, in the case of our main protagonist: Mark, when his wife died, he tried several ways to deal with that death, however none worked, but it is until he started working in Lumon, which due to this separation, at least for 8 hours a day (or as long as his work week lasts), he will be able to "forget" her because being a totally different consciousness, he does not have to be thinking about something as sad and tragic as death.
It is quite interesting how the argument of this series is raised, since the "working" version of the person, lives only to work, when disconnecting and reconnecting, the working part only sees that, the work, so little by little that "working" version, is succumbing to the question of knowing what is outside the company, how is his version outside of work, what does he do, how he lives, with whom he lives, there are many unknowns that crosses that part of the conscience. As well as the unknown of knowing what the company Lumon really does, since throughout the chapters it is seen that there is an exaggerated and very strange control of its workers, besides finding very strange things in the corridors of this company.
The other characters also pose their own unknown to the viewer (us as viewers of the series), because like Mark, the main protagonist, each character contributes his grain of sand in the development of the series and in the events that will reveal what really happens in this place. In short, Severance is one of the best series I have seen this year, perhaps for many people at the beginning it can be a little slow in development, although personally for me it was not, but I understand if for some people it is perceived as such, however, if you manage to overcome that "negative" aspect at the beginning, you will find a very good and extremely interesting series.
