En este post del día de hoy les hablaré de una de las series más interesantes estrenadas durante el año 2020: Gambito de Dama
Una mini serie que cuenta con 7 capítulos ambientada en los años 50´y 60´. Basada en una novela de Walter Tevis. Dirigida por Scott Frank y Allan Scott, producida por Netflix y protagonizada por la increíble actriz Anya Taylor-Joy.

In today's post I will tell you about one of the most interesting series released during the year 2020: The Queen's Gambit A mini series with 7 chapters set in the 50's and 60'. Based on a novel by Walter Tevis. Directed by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, produced by Netflix and starring the incredible actress Anya Taylor-Joy.

Esta serie cuenta la historia ficticia de Beth Harmon, una niña de 9 años que sufre un accidente de auto provocado por su mamá (quien si muere en el accidente) y que a causa de ello es llevada a un orfanato para niñas.
Estando en el orfanato se hace de una amiga, una niña llamada Jolene, y por otro lado conoce al conserje del orfanato, el Sr. Shaibel (Bill Camp) quien es su mentor y le enseña a jugar ajedrez. Es aquí donde Beth descubre que tiene un increíble don para este juego pero al mismo tiempo crea una adicción por las drogas debido a unas pastillas - tranquilizantes que les daban a todos las niñas del orfanato para estabilizar su estado de ánimo.
Summary with many SPOILERS
This series tells the fictional story of Beth Harmon, a 9-year-old girl who gets into a car accident caused by her mother (who does die in the accident) and is taken to an orphanage for girls.
While at the orphanage she makes a friend, a girl named Jolene, and meets the orphanage janitor, Mr. Shaibel (Bill Camp) who mentors her and teaches her how to play chess. It is here where Beth discovers that she has an incredible gift for this game but at the same time creates a drug addiction due to some pills - tranquilizers that were given to all the children of the orphanage to stabilize their mood.
Pasan los años y es adoptada, Beth empieza su nueva vida con la familia pero todo se complica cuando el padre adoptivo abandona a su madre adoptiva Alma Wheatley (Marielle Heller) y a ella. Así que Beth empieza a acudir a torneos de Ajedrez para recaudar dinero y ayudar a su madre con los gastos.
No obstante Alma se da cuenta del talento que tiene y es aquí donde ella y Beth viajan para que Beth compita profesionalmente.
Years go by and she is adopted, Beth starts her new life with the family but everything gets complicated when the adoptive father abandons her adoptive mother Alma Wheatley (Marielle Heller) and her. So Beth starts going to Chess tournaments to raise money to help her adoptive mother with expenses. However, when Alma realizes how talented she is, she and Beth travel to Mexico for Beth to compete professionally.
Años después, en un viaje que hicieron a México para una competencia, Alma muere en la cama de hotel por causa de hepatitis. Otro acontecimiento que marcó a Beth y le dio un giro a las decisiones y actitudes de este personaje, ya que Beth en ese momento se volvió más dependiente del alcohol y drogas.
Years later, on a trip to Mexico for a competition, Alma dies in a hotel bed from hepatitis. Another event that marked Beth and gave a twist to the decisions and attitudes of this character, since Beth at that time became more dependent on alcohol and drugs.
Esto siguió hasta la visita de su amiga de la infancia Jolene (Moses Ingram), quien se había convertido en una asistente legal exitosa y llegó en el momento justo para ayudar a Beth a salir de ese ciclo vicioso que le estaba arruinando la vida. También la ayuda económicamente para viajar a Rusia y ganar el campeonato mundial. (Este personaje si llegó en el momento justo).
This continued until a visit from her childhood friend Jolene (Moses Ingram), who had become a successful paralegal and arrived at just the right time to help Beth get out of the vicious cycle that was ruining her life. She also helps her financially to travel to Russia and win the world championship (This character did come at the right time).
En el tiempo en que Jolene estuvo de visita, ella le comentó que el Sr. Shaibel había fallecido y acudieron a su funeral. Volvieron al orfanato y es allí donde ella baja al sótano y ve el tablero de anuncios y recortes de periódico que tenía el Sr. Shaibel quien fue lo más cercano que tuvo Beth a una figura paterna.
During the time Jolene was visiting, she told her that Mr. Shaibel had passed away and they attended his funeral. They returned to the orphanage and it is there that she goes down to the basement and sees the bulletin board and newspaper clippings that Mr. Shaibel had who was the closest thing Beth had to a father figure.
Estos acontecimientos hacen que Beth se recupere y se centre en lo que tanto ama: el ajedrez. Viaja a Rusia para competir en el torneo mundial. (Él cual gana).
These events cause Beth to recover and focus on what she loves so much: chess. She travels to Russia to compete in the world tournament (which she wins).
Al final se ve a Beth paseando por un parque de la Ciudad donde ve a unos ancianos jugando ajedrez y se une a ellos, quizás recordando sus días de clases con el Sr. Shaibel en el orfanato.
At the end Beth is seen walking in a City park where she sees some old people playing chess and joins them, perhaps remembering her days of classes with Mr. Shaibel at the orphanage.
El feminismo en esta serie
La protagonista de esta serie es una mujer inteligente y fuerte que desde pequeña paso por dificultades y momentos muy tristes. No obstante, la serie también trata de reflejar como una mujer intenta triunfar en un deporte que es dominado por hombres.
Algo que se ve claro es que a Beth le asombra el hecho que sea el centro de atención de la prensa solo por ser mujer y no por sus habilidades como jugadora, incluso lo expresa en una de sus entrevistas y así como expresa que solo quiere ser el referente para otras mujeres.
En la serie vemos personajes que no son perfectos pero que tienen un rol muy importante en la vida y decisiones de Beth, como lo es su madre adoptiva.
Me gusta de esta serie que quiere dar ese toque feminista sin desmeritar o hacer ver a los hombres como “malos”, sino que más bien la aceptan y ayudan en su momento (algo que no sé si se viera mucho para esa época).
Feminism in this series
The protagonist of this series is an intelligent and strong woman who, since she was a child, went through difficulties and very sad moments. However, the series also tries to reflect how a woman tries to succeed in a sport that is dominated by men. One thing that is clear is that Beth is amazed by the fact that she is the center of attention of the press just for being a woman and not for her skills as a player, she even expresses it in one of her interviews and says that she just wants to be the reference for other women.
In the series we see characters who are not perfect but who play a very important role in Beth's life and decisions, such as her adoptive mother. I like that this series wants to give that feminist touch without belittling or making men look like "bad guys", but rather that they accept and help her at the time (something I don't know if it was seen much for that time).
Mi opinión en general
Lo primero que puedo decir es que no necesitas ser amante del ajedrez para disfrutar de esta serie. La vas a disfrutar mucho ya que la serie mantiene el mismo nivel durante todos los episodios.
No es una serie lenta ni aburre, por el contrario hay momentos que te mantiene tenso pensando que puede pasar y te la recomiendo para que la veas completa en un fin de semana.
Al haber tantas partidas de ajedrez pensaras que puede volverse algo aburrida, pero por el contrario en cada partida te interesas por lo que va a suceder y aún más en el último capítulo. De manera que aunque el tema en Gambito de Dama sea el ajedrez, en realidad no trata solo de eso, sino sobre la historia de una joven con un talento extraordinario para ese juego, que lucha constantemente con una adicción desde pequeña pero que sueña conseguir sobresalir en esa actividad y ser la mejor.
My opinion in general
The first thing I can say is that you don't need to be a chess lover to enjoy this series. You are going to enjoy it a lot since the series maintains the same level during all the episodes. It is not a slow or boring series, on the contrary, there are moments that keep you tense thinking about what could happen and I recommend you to watch it all in one weekend.
Because there are so many chess games you might think that it could get a bit boring, but on the contrary, in each game you are interested in what is going to happen and even more so in the last chapter. So even though the theme in Lady's Gambit is chess, it's not really about chess, but about the story of a young girl with an extraordinary talent for the game, who constantly struggles with an addiction since she was a child but dreams of excelling in this activity and being the best.
