El Hoyo: Film Review

Review by @gabolegends · 1844d · of The Platform

The greatest challenge that can exist for humanity is the destruction of its own savagery.

A prison, 333 floors, a platform with delicious delicacies ... but with very few rations for all the inmates to satisfy their pansas. This is how “El Hoyo” works, a mechanized vertical structure where each floor is connected to the other by a huge hole in the center of the cells, along where a square table full of succulent dishes descends from the highest cell to the last. The rules are simple: the platform stops for a period of time on each floor, allowing inmates to eat before it continues to descend. The higher you are, the more likely you are to remain hungry. But the lower you go ... that's the hard part: cannibalism, torture, fighting to the death, all to savor some meat and not die trying. No one is safe: today you are on floor 1, but tomorrow in 200. The dynamics are rotating, the experience is hellish, and the escape is much more complex than many believe.

El Hoyo is a Thriller that takes you around in a sticky mystery, difficult to understand, and more than visceral. This Spanish film has the peculiarity of putting together questions in the viewer to decipher a paradigm that at first glance is almost impossible to look at. I did not think it was a film with much to offer, but when I saw the first sequence, a thousand unknowns jumped into my mind. "This story is a difficult one," I thought immediately. The fact is that most of the friends who had recommended it to me had not been able to fully understand what the meaning of this film was, that message that we all analyze right off the bat when we look carefully at the images shown by the camera. . For the first time I felt hypnotized, it was almost impossible not to take my eyes off my PC. I knew instantly that "El Hoyo" was one of those treasures that we find very little in the great repertoire of Netflix.

This feature film shows us the hell that Goreng must live, a man who loves Don Quixote who has decided to enter “Al Hoyo” of his own free will. Inside the cell he meets Trimagasi, an old man who has been convicted after a fit of anger with a knife and a few infomercials. Luckily for Goreng, his stay begins on the 48th floor, where he and his partner can savor some of the leftovers that their fellow higher-ups have already tasted, spit out, and even worse. Everything seems to go wrong, until it gets a lot worse. After waking up tied on the 171st floor by the unpleasant and hungry companion of his Trimagasi, Goreng will understand that that vertical system of pressures is much worse than hell. Now, with the threat of the old man eating him bit by bit, Goreng must understand the hard way that in matters of survival only the strongest, fastest and most cunning survive, of course.

El Hoyo is a Spanish production directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, who first ventured into the arduous work of directing a feature film thanks to this film. The conception of the script was carried out by Pedro Rivero and David Desola, two brilliant minds capable of putting together a story with enough horror, suspense and humor to amaze our senses. The film was released for 2019, causing some critical stir. Spectacular for some and unnaturally magnificent for others. The conception of "El Hoyo" is that fundamental step of the Hispanic American cinema on its way to consolidation before a Hollywood that, of course, is not the only one that offers splendid franchises.

Goreng

Of all the things that Goreng was allowed to take to the cell to accompany his confinement, he only chose one book. Don Quixote helps him meditate a lot about his life, although in El Hoyo things will change forever. At first he just wants to survive the six months of his confinement to acquire that diploma that will take him home with another trophy for his collection. However, between floor and floor, savagery, cannibalism and strong hallucinations, Goreng will have no choice but to reconsider his intentions and consider escape. Daring to defy the system and test the laws of "sharing", this book lover will have the difficult task of sending a message to the administrators of hell they call jail just to prove that savagery can be repaid with some "thanks."

Trimagasi

personaje 02.jpg

Trimagasi is clever, obviously, the jail where he lives is not for weak people. His other companion is the knife that led him to his condemnation, this one, in addition to being faithful, brings some food to his mouth when they touch the lower floors. You have to go a step forward, obviously, because if you don't, you will easily become the prey. Goreng is weak, something very particular in people who are stupid, obviously. Yes, the "obvious" is Trimagasi's other weapon; this old man with good eyes to relate indisputable facts to the naked eye. His task, like Goreng's, is to survive. So it is easy to understand that when hunger strikes indefinitely, even your friends can become food ... obvious.

Imoguiri

When the platform descends Imoguiri comes with her. She is a scruffy woman looking for a daughter that no one has seen. She doesn't lose hope, so she visits each floor making sure her little girl is safe. In the attempt she encounters beatings, fights and even attempted rape. But she is strong, unstoppable, and deadly. She never had an attachment to anyone until Goreng tried to save her. From there, he was special to her. It was Imoguire who let Goreng know that survival is not for the weak, but for the one who throws the knife faster.

My opinion about El Hoyo

Mi opinión acerca de El Hoyo

2.jpg Source-Fuente

This is the first Spanish language Thriller movie I have seen and it has left me a great experience. The film plays very well with the mind of the viewer, confusing it with grotesque images and endless twists that take a ring out of your mouth. El Hoyo mixes science fiction with horror to keep the suspense alive. Survival is, of course, the fundamental premise of history framed by the wildest, most selfish, and most miserable side of human nature. The platform full of food is only proof of this: when it descends, the inmates eat without thinking about those below. Obviously, "sharing" is unthinkable, especially when vanity is prayer before trying the first bite.

Photography helps a lot to create that dark and wild setting that brings the film to life. Dark tones blend with yellows and reds to reveal ghoulish smiles and gaunt gestures. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia knew how to consolidate the vision of the script under an interesting concept. The camera showed detailed shots of the characters' reactions, including their smallest gestures of fear and bewilderment. This for me was completely successful, since the making of the film allows the mind to remain attached to the images until the screen fades to black. Despite the fact that everything takes place in a single setting, the story has a lot of dynamism. All cells are identical, except for the floor they are on and the food that reaches them on the platform. Under this dilemma you become an extra inmate, one who watches everything from the screen but still feels inside.

The idea of a bunch of people wedged in vertical cells with the great challenge of “sharing” food is a premise that certainly drives anyone crazy. The subject seems simple, but it is really deep. Here the message is difficult to decipher because it goes beyond “surviving”. As you analyze the tape you understand that the true exit to all that hell is nothing more than a living allegory from beginning to end. I watched the movie twice: the first time to enjoy it, and the second time to study it carefully. The feature film becomes complex because it leaves that "hole" between its scenes that make it free to interpretation, although not for that reason indecipherable.

The performances were another great success. I loved the way that Iván Massagué personified Goreng. His hallucinations were palpable on camera, as was his noticeable drastic change in his worldview over the course of the film. The end, despite being merely open, could reveal the fundamental center of the paradigm. That's when you understand the delusional nature of the film, and its willingness to immerse you in a completely psychotic, disturbed, and abnormal environment. That is why this film is and will be one of my favorites.

You will meet Goreng, a reader of Don Quixote who will learn some things about life, including that of "eating or being eaten." Savagery is not only an evil of the beasts, because true monsters are closer than we think: they dress well, sing beautifully and even smile carefully. You only need to push them off the cliff to see how the claws dig into each other.

This was an excellent movie. I loved how crazy it was, how macabre the dynamics were between the people inside this structure, the little twists it had, the charisma in the old man who was always saying "obvio". It was a really original and enjoyable movie. A bit shocking but I loved it.
