¿Amor no correspondido? ¿Bla, bla, bla?
Every time someone talks to us about adolescence, what do we imagine? Maybe a bunch of high testosterone cheerleaders and soccer players? Nerd or Misfits? Romantic Dramas? Unrequited love? Bla bla bla? Certainly, the recurring stories that depict the life of a teenager always fall into these clichés, but today I am going to tell you about a television series that particularly addresses adolescence from the most absurd angle of puberty. Its name is: PEN15.
This television series was released in 2019 by the HULU network, and its plot is the life of Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine, two misfit girls who go to high school and face the atypical problems of any pre-adolescent. Little by little, and through a somewhat crazy friendship, Anna and Maya will experience how crude and strange it can be to abandon childhood to arrive at the world of sexuality, rivalry and lies, all of this, of course, from the perspective more sympathetic to humor and drama.
I started watching PEN15 at the beginning of the year. I really like comedy stories, but above all those that address the humor that can be squeezed out of life. When I first saw PEN15 I immediately realized that the lead actresses were "a bit old" to play 13-year-old characters. But did this aspect bother me? Rather I laughed out loud. That sarcastic touch was what encouraged me to continue watching the series, because in some way or another it worked for me. And when something absurd is well crafted in a story, you rarely abandon it.
PEN15 is a series that makes you relive that most uncomfortable side of pre-adolescent. I mean, we see two girls who wear braces and get in trouble for a thong, or because they are beginning to discover each other sexually, or simply trying to fit in a world that rejects them. The simple fact that they look "different" from the rest of their classmates already gives you a background message. They are weird, and most hate weirdness. However, sometimes the weird can be more normal than you think.
Seeing the lives of two girls in the middle of the year 2000, where the internet was very slow and shirts were worn by the navel, can be completely uncomfortable but at the same time fascinating. On the one hand we have Maya, a Japanese-American girl who is usually the class clown. Maya is one of the characters that most reminds me of my younger years. That mushroom-shaped hair, the peculiar way of stooping with the weight of the backpack and that disposition to get in trouble transport me back to my days of high school. Maya is the humor of the misfit, of which she does not end up fitting with a good hammer and a few nails. But is it necessary to fit in? Not for her. Maya is happy, because in all that weirdness that she experiences in her metamorphosis to adolescence she finds the support of Anna, another misfit with whom she shares much in common.
Anna, on the other hand, is a bit more submissive. She is tall and with somewhat disheveled blonde hair, and with clothes that are too small for her wherever you see them, she tends to follow the antics that her friend Maya of hers gets into. Anna is not a docile character, because after all she gets into trouble too. For her the phrase "If you do it, I do it too" is completely correct. Isn't that how friends think? With Anna we live how hard divorce can be the lack of understanding and affection. She looks for that love that she lacks so much in Maya, because while she is with her best friend she can forget the conflicts of her mother and father. She is happy with him, or rather, they are both happy. Friendship can be rare. It works?
I enjoyed both seasons of the show. With generally short episodes (lasting approximately 36 minutes) the plot is so entertaining that time flies by. I like the fact that its own writers, who are also the main actresses of the series, have insisted on drawing inspiration from their own lives for the shoot. This adds some good flavor to the business of inseparable friends, and the performance particularly convinces the viewer. Both managed to get into the skin of 13-year-old girls, having the disadvantage of their 30-year-old appearance. The acting is so natural and fluid that you really think they are 13, something very admirable of course.
Anna and Maya are two very crude characters that will force you to remember the most absurd side of a teenager. This story will not tell you about the typical adolescent lovers, the nerd or the popular one, or the clumsy friendships. PEN15 is the sample closest to "true adolescence", the one where everything excites you, angers you, makes you blush and alarmed. In this story, puberty is not a taboo, rather it is the main thread that unifies drama and humor.
This TV series has everything it takes to have a good time: humor, drama, weird romance, gross kisses, awkward antics, weird people, lies, more humor, two crazy girls who look 30 but are 13 and one secondary school that is experiencing the full boom of the internet and braces. If you are a lover of these types of stories, then you must take a walk through the life of Anna and Maya. You will find two friends who will get you more than one laugh. You will suffer and have fun with them, and also, you will live very rare moments that any teenager ever experienced in her life.
Since when had shame been so entertaining?
