Words on Bathroom Walls: Review

Review by @gabolegends · 1909d · of Words on Bathroom Walls

I always thought that madness had no emotions, however, as most of the time, making judgments without a fully reliable accompaniment only makes us complete charlatans. There is Adam, for example: This thin, shaky boy with straight hair and a huge desire to be a gourmet chef. He particularly suffers from schizophrenia, a terrible mental illness that turns the reality of those who suffer from it. Adam has 3 imaginary friends, including a hippie girl, an apparent pimp, and a thug who likes baseball bats. Are real? Yes for Adam, not for the rest of the world, and that is exactly the problem.

This film goes beyond a youth romance. Not your typical testosterone love. The camera ascends showing us this adolescent with mental problems and also emotional problems. He attends a therapy, but very little do we see the therapist, before the screen there are only throbbing eyes and trembling bones within a kind of young man who fights against his infamous hallucinations. His voices repeat the same thing over and over again: "You are a failure." Adam is the only one who hears them and feels them inside his heart. Come on, why precisely him? It could be anyone, what did Adam do to deserve such punishment? Nobody understands it because only he can suffer it. This is pain and grief, they are non-transferable. Even the brightest spark can be cleared by darkness.

Maya arrives to change Adam's absurd thinking. She is like a hazelnut, so beautiful and hard to break. He is weak, he doubts even the fact that Maya is not part of a non-existent reality. She is a good tutor, she even draws the numbers as Da Vinci sketches her art. She teaches him, she also makes him fall in love with her. In Maya's smile there is a life very different from the garbage that he has for home. In those four walls there is only a mother who hates him but who pretends not to, and there is also Paul, the little guy who tries to overcome the condition of his stepfather. The voices don't stop and they get worse and worse, and Adam is unwilling to drink those pills. He can control it, he can keep Rebecca, Joaquin and The Bat Man in check that he thinks he's a bodyguard. They are not real, they do not exist! Why does it have to be so difficult to accept it?

The problem with schizophrenia is that reality bends, it becomes a nightmare. In Adam's eyes everything is as real and tangible as the autumn leaves or the snow on the streets of New York in the winter. But for the rest of the world it is only insanity, dementia, a kind of disease worthy of the madhouse. Are we so indolent? Is it fear and not indifference? This mental pathology is complex and has no cure. The human brain is the tip of life, it is in it where the senses explode and are activated: sight, taste, smell and touch. When this machine of neurons goes out of balance, everything that keeps us "sane" disappears. The pain comes in the form of delirium, isolation, loneliness...

We are just pigeons trying to take flight, although we will always be haunted by the fear that our wings will break. Adam's ailerons are featherless, dry like a bare skeleton. Still he tries to fly, shaking his dry limbs in pain and agony. It is not Adam who is to blame that his wings are withered, for it was the world that mashed them. Longing for his diploma to become the chef he wishes to be, this young man tries to live normally, keeping the secret of his insanity from the eyes of his friends. He is afraid; he is terrified that they will see him as a maniac. Maya would hate him, and he doesn't want Maya to hate him. In different scenes we see them together, sharing a subtle love in front of the camera. It is a romance that does not become cloying; it is even overshadowed by something greater: fear, doubt and fear.

The film manages to fill the viewer with nostalgia and why not? We are in the presence of a young man who only wants to live as any young man of his age lives: without bitter pills that also have terrible side effects, without voices that whisper what you should do or how unsuccessful you are, without that scary look with which everyone They classify you as crazy, and without the fear that you will lose control and end up hurting the one you love the most. Adam is watched closely by the director of the religious campus where he is in his last year of high school. The nuns regard him as a threat, as a skin-changing beast that can pull its claws out of him at any moment. That is selfishness, and also a lack of humanity, and if you will allow me to say as Adam said to his therapist: a real sh*t.

It is a common cause of schizophrenia to believe that everyone is against you, however, when the impudence is too obvious the hallucinations are locked in the trunk. Anything that sees madness between his lines is considered a real threat. In one of the scenes, Adam puts this fact on the table with a bitter smile and somewhat trembling lips. A memory haunts his mind and triggers his memory. He reminds the girl that she had terminal cancer and everyone wanted to fulfill one last wish, even a famous band dedicated a repertoire of songs to her. What about schizophrenics? He says, helplessly, something like the following line that I have summarized from his most moving dialogue: People with cancer all want to fulfill a wish. Schizophrenics only end up screaming in the streets...

Adam certainly moved me through 111 minutes of scenes, dialogue and many hallucinations. The most beautiful thing about the film is that it does not try to show you a madman, much less concentrates all his resources on the effect of madness. We only see a young man who wants to be normal without so many pills involved and who of course wants to fall in love. Maya is that savior who encourages him and gives him some hope. She also has problems; she also suffers and tries very hard to survive a world that looks at her from the corner of her eye. The camera connects scenarios such as a Never Been Kissed-style movie date, a tasteless meal, a bumpy prom, and an unfair sanitarium. Adam is the hallucination in context, a character who seems more real than the rest of the world.

Words on Bathroom Walls are inspired by the novel by Julia Walton. His title, I could say, was what caught my attention the most. The school bathrooms are undoubtedly a nasty space for graffiti filled with hate and verbal violence. This concept was conceived in the seventh art under the brush of Nick Naveda and the magic chamber of Thor Freudenthal. If we talk about the main character, I think actor Charlie Plummer got into the world of imagined voices with his peculiar wild gestures and heavy breathing of him. Maybe it lacked more spark, but not enough to unravel the entire movie.

I cannot conclude without saying that Words on Bathroom Walls is a feature film that cultivates emotions despite not having a large cast of actors or overrated publicity. I have always had the faithful conviction that a good film is based on the depth of the message it wants to convey, and when this fact touches and embraces the viewer's heart, it has all been worth it. It is a story that helps us learn about the terrible disease that schizophrenia can be, and how it can be overcome with the help of love and friendship. It's like Adam himself said:

"We are condemned to see things where there are none, but as long as there are people who tell you what is real and what is not, you can have the conviction that everything will be fine."
