Saludos a todos los miembros de la comunidad, ¿cómo están? El día de hoy decidí participar en el concurso navideño porque me encantan estas fiestas y me parece la oportunidad perfecta para compartir esta película. Navidad es esta época donde se supone que compartimos con nuestros seres queridos creando bellos recuerdos cada año, en muchas oportunidades incluso dejando de lado altercados presentados todo el año para darle cabida a la convivencia, sin embargo, no para todos es así, hay quienes atraviesan por dificultades particulares cuando de reunirse con la familia se trata, uno de estos sectores es la comunidad LGBT+ afrontando ciertas dificultades diferentes. Llegar a ese punto donde tienes una pareja con la que te ves en un futuro y quieres incluirla con el resto de la familia es normal, supone un procedimiento estándar dentro de la relación, pero esta tarea resulta ser complicada cuando nunca le has contado a tu familia que estás en una relación con una persona del mismo sexo. Sí, en parte esta es una película que va sobre salir del armario, como lo llaman, desde una perspectiva navideña con comedia de la que podrías esperar de una película navideña con un romance heterosexual, pues tiene la misma vibra. Es sin duda alguna una excelente aproximación a historias inclusivas de navidad donde se coloca el foco sobre parejas de la comunidad, cambiando un poco esas narrativas navideñas donde abunda la heterosexualidad.
Greetings to all the members of the community, how are you? Today I decided to participate in the Christmas contest because I love these holidays and it seems to me the perfect opportunity to share this movie. Christmas is this time where we are supposed to share with our loved ones creating beautiful memories every year, in many opportunities even leaving aside altercations presented throughout the year to make room for coexistence, however, not for everyone it is like that, there are those who go through particular difficulties when it comes to meeting with family, one of these sectors is the LGBT+ community facing certain different difficulties. Getting to that point where you have a partner you see yourself with in the future and you want to include them with the rest of the family is normal, it involves a standard procedure within the relationship, but this task turns out to be complicated when you have never told your family that you are in a same-sex relationship. Yes, in part this is a movie about coming out, as they call it, from a Christmas perspective with comedy than you might expect from a Christmas movie with a heterosexual romance, as it has the same vibe. It is without a doubt an excellent approach to inclusive Christmas stories where the focus is placed on couples from the community, changing a bit those Christmas narratives where heterosexuality abounds.
Aquí nos encontramos con una pareja de dos mujeres, Abby, quien es interpretada por la icónica Kristen Stewart, y Harper, quien es interpretada por Mackenzie Davies. Siguen tal vez un poco el cliché de las parejas lésbicas sobre rapidez en cuanto a las etapas de una relación, llevan un poco más de un año y Abby ya tiene en mente pedirle matrimonio a Harper, pero ¿qué importa? Cuando se quiere a una persona de verdad no importa el tiempo, dicen por allí, además de que su química es aceptable, se entiende por qué quisiera dar ese gran salto. Pese a no ser fanática de las festividades decembrinas, Abby acepta la invitación de Harper para pasar navidad con ella y toda su familia… algo que no pensó del todo en lo absoluto porque sus padres no tienen idea de que le gustan las mujeres, mucho menos que está en una relación con una, por lo que las mentiras van a tener que empezar a fluir, incluso llegando a presentar a Abby como una amiga, quien además es heterosexual —quién en su sano juicio se llegaría a creer que es heterosexual es algo que escapa de mi conocimiento, sin querer caer en los estereotipos, al personaje de Abby lo único que le faltaba es escupir arcoíris por la boca— y acaba de terminar una relación. El hecho de que Harper oculte a Abby provoca con razón peleas a nivel de pareja y respecto a la acogida del público, porque el trato que le da no gusta en lo absoluto, me vi en la necesidad de usar por completo mi empatía para comprender sus sentimientos, pero aun así, quedaba cierta sensación incómoda en el pecho.
Here we meet a couple of two women, Abby, who is played by the iconic Kristen Stewart, and Harper, who is played by Mackenzie Davies. They follow perhaps a bit of a lesbian couple cliché about how quickly they go through the stages of a relationship, they've been together a little over a year and Abby already has her mind set on proposing to Harper, but who cares? When you really love someone, time doesn't matter, they say, plus their chemistry is acceptable, you can understand why she would want to take that big leap. Despite not being a fan of the holiday season, Abby accepts Harper's invitation to spend Christmas with her and her whole family.... something she didn't think at all because her parents have no idea that she likes women, much less that she is in a relationship with one, so the lies are going to have to start flowing, even introducing Abby as a friend, who is also straight - who in their right mind would believe she is straight is beyond me, without wanting to fall into stereotypes, Abby's character just needed to spit rainbows out of her mouth - and she has just ended a relationship. The fact that Harper hides Abby rightly causes fights at the couple level and regarding the reception of the public, because the treatment he gives her does not like at all, I found myself in the need to fully use my empathy to understand her feelings, but even so, there remained some uncomfortable feeling in the chest.
La interpretación de Mackenzie Davies me pareció acertada y las críticas que recibió creo que estuvieron mal orientadas. El personaje de Harper desde que se comienza a desarrollar la trama argumentativa de la película se encuentra con esa inseguridad por no haber revelado todavía sus preferencias sexuales a su familia pero de igual manera visitándola de la mano de su novia aunque estos no sepan que lo es, ocurre muy temprano, por lo que esa actitud arriesgada que vemos cuando convence a Abby de subirse en un techo para mirar las decoraciones de navidad queda atrás, así que durante lo que queda de película que es un tiempo largo, vemos a una mujer insegura, distante y que pasa por insensible porque se encuentra en constante estado de alerta intentando que nadie se entere de su secreto, he allí la razón por la que no brille de igual manera que los demás, cuyos personajes son fieles a sí mismos. Como actriz Kristen Stewart siempre ha sido criticada, pero aquí hizo un trabajo impecable logrando conectar con la audiencia a través del papel de una mujer dolida porque el amor de su vida está negando su relación al omitirla por completo, mostrando su frustración no solamente en gestos sino con esas llamadas telefónicas que tiene con su mejor amigo John que cobra vida gracias a la gran interpretación de Dan Levy. En este sentido, sería ilógico no mencionar a Aubrey Plaza, con su maravillosa actuación como Riley la exnovia de Harper, robándose las miradas y la simpatía del público.
I thought Mackenzie Davies' performance was spot on and the criticisms she received were misguided. Harper's character from the beginning of the film's plot is insecure because she has not yet revealed her sexual preferences to her family, but visiting her hand in hand with her girlfriend even though they don't know she is, happens very early on, so the risky attitude we see when she convinces Abby to climb on a roof to look at the Christmas decorations is left behind, so for the remainder of the movie, which is a long time, we see a woman who is insecure, distant and passes for insensitive because she is in a constant state of alert trying to make sure no one finds out about her secret, which is why she doesn't shine as brightly as the others, whose characters are true to themselves. As an actress Kristen Stewart has always been criticized, but here she did an impeccable job managing to connect with the audience through the role of a woman hurt because the love of her life is denying their relationship by omitting it completely, showing her frustration not only in gestures but with those phone calls she has with her best friend John who comes to life thanks to the great performance of Dan Levy. In this sense, it would be illogical not to mention Aubrey Plaza, with her wonderful performance as Harper's ex-girlfriend Riley, stealing the audience's looks and sympathy.
Es una comedia navideña que no busca ser nada más que eso, algo que logra de maravilla y no debería esperarse tampoco grandes recursos en el guion porque simplemente quiere causar la misma sensación que las demás películas, diálogos sencillos cuya esencia surge a partir de la caracterización de los actores. Deja enseñanza de unión familiar, resolviendo problemas familiares que vienen de años pasados y varias conductas tóxicas como rivalidades entre hermanas y una perfección ficticia, todos estos acontecimientos desenvolviéndose alrededor de la magia de la navidad, como debería de ser. Termina resultando en una película agradable que a decir verdad se disfruta, con ese humor simple con situaciones impredecibles, de los mejores aportes respecto a esto está el personaje de Jane, una de las hermanas de Harper, una persona con personalidad muy especial que es tratada pésimo por esta familia —no la merecen— pero supongo que por lo menos reconocieron su error al final. Las intervenciones entre Harper y Sloan pueden llegar a ser muy divertidas explotando esa energía caótica de hermanas que disfruté, así que dejaré a continuación un video por si les interesa.
It is a Christmas comedy that seeks to be nothing more than that, something that it achieves wonderfully and should not be expected either great resources in the script because it simply wants to cause the same feeling as other films, simple dialogues whose essence arises from the characterization of the actors. It teaches family togetherness, solving family problems that come from years past and various toxic behaviors such as rivalries between sisters and a fictitious perfection, all these events unfolding around the magic of Christmas, as it should be. It ends up resulting in a pleasant movie that to tell the truth is enjoyable, with that simple humor with unpredictable situations, one of the best contributions regarding this is the character of Jane, one of Harper's sisters, a person with a very special personality who is treated badly by this family -they don't deserve her- but I guess at least they recognized their mistake at the end. The interventions between Harper and Sloan can become very funny exploiting that chaotic sisterly energy which I enjoyed, so I'll leave a video below in case you're interested.
