Saludos a todos los miembros de la comunidad, ¿cómo están? Esto se está asemejando demasiado para mi gusto en una obsesión pero no me quejo del impulso que siempre acabo teniendo por mirar alguna película de terror reciente, dentro de las cuales destacó esta llamada ‘La casa Belleville’ —nombre en español que no está muy acorde al original ‘Master’ que en lo personal prefiero— puesto que me gustan las tramas argumentativas que se desarrollan alrededor de la problemática del racismo, más dentro de los géneros del terror, suspenso y drama, siempre que después de haber visto a Jordan Peele crear una de mis películas favoritas como lo es ‘¡Huye!’ la cual también se desenvuelve en torno a esos temas aunque desde una perspectiva que resultó fresca a las maneras que se habían estado presenciando en las películas, he querido tratar de tener la misma sensación de impacto.
Greetings to all members of the community, how are you? This is becoming too much like an obsession for my taste but I'm not complaining about the impulse I always end up having to watch some recent horror movie, among which this one called 'The Belleville House' —Spanish name that is not very consistent with the original 'Master' that I personally prefer— stood out because I like the plots that are developed around the issue of racism, more within the genres of horror, suspense and drama, always after having seen Jordan Peele create one of my favorite movies like 'Run!’ which also revolves around those themes but from a perspective that was fresh to the ways that had been witnessed in the movies, I wanted to try to have the same sense of impact.
De entrada puedo decir que no es nada parecido, para aclarar la situación en caso de que se hayan creado algunas ilusiones. En esta cinematografía se van a desarrollar no solamente diversas tramas argumentativas desde un plano principal a un plano secundario de manera simultánea, por lo que pasarán muchas cosas a las que habrá que prestarle atención para no perderse dentro de ese cúmulo de situaciones que la verdad a mí me enredaron un poco, supongo que por el tiempo que tenía desde que miré una película donde se incluyeran tantos elementos argumentativos, que no precisamente están relacionados entre sí. Los personajes principales sobre los cuales se desenvolverán los acontecimientos serán tres mujeres de color que se encuentran luchando sus propias contiendas dentro del ambiente difícil de esta universidad de Nueva Inglaterra, llamada Ancaster, donde la población estudiantil es mayoritariamente blanca.
At the outset I can say that it is nothing like it, to clarify the situation in case you have created some illusions. In this cinematography, there are not only several plots that will be developed simultaneously from a main plane to a secondary plane, so many things will happen to which you will have to pay attention to avoid getting lost in this accumulation of situations that actually tangled me a little, I guess because of the time I had since I watched a movie where so many plot elements were included, which are not exactly related to each other. The main characters on which the events unfold are three women of color who find themselves fighting their own battles within the difficult environment of this New England university, called Ancaster, where the student population is mostly white.
El hecho de que la mayoría de las personas allí sea blanca, no lo convierte en algo malo en sí mismo, pero ¿qué pasa cuando juntas eso con agresiones racistas sutiles y símbolos alusivos al periodo de la esclavitud pululando por allí, detrás de los focos centrales? Presentando situaciones cotidianas que muchas personas de color han pasado y desgraciadamente es probable que sigan pasando en su vida, se mezclan el terror clásico proveniente de figuras paranormales como los fantasmas con el drama del entramado en que se encuentran las protagonistas, que se lleva un mayor enfoque desde mi punto de vista, volviéndose un tanto incómodo de presenciar… porque sí, no asusta, sino que te hace sentir incómodo y frustrado. Sin embargo, una de esas frustraciones no se encuentra ligada a algún argumento en específico, sino en la sensación de que falta la necesaria profundización de los personajes que se presentan.
The fact that the majority of the people there are white doesn't make it a bad thing in and of itself, but what happens when you couple that with subtle racist aggression and symbols alluding to the slavery period swarming around behind the central lights? Presenting everyday situations that many people of color have gone through and unfortunately are likely to continue to go through in their lifetime, it mixes the classic terror coming from paranormal figures like ghosts with the drama of the entrapment the protagonists find themselves in, which takes a greater focus from my point of view, becoming somewhat uncomfortable to witness... because yes, it's not scary, it just makes you uncomfortable and frustrated. However, one of those frustrations is not linked to any specific plot, but in the feeling that the necessary deepening of the characters presented is lacking.
Debo aclarar que no es cuestión de la interpretación, creo que la actuación de Zoe Renee, Regina Hall y Amber Gray estuvieron fantásticas pero cómo se desarrollaron a los personajes dentro de este ambiente me pareció carente de algo que en términos de generar conexión con los espectadores siempre me gusta destacar, eso es la personalidad a través de mostrarnos quiénes son estas mujeres como personas aparte de estas dentro de las situaciones por las cuales están pasando. Este guion de Mariama Diallo creo que presenta demasiadas cosas que en realidad no pretende dejar atadas para el espectador antes de terminar la cinematografía y por eso no comentaré sobre el hecho de que no explique puntos que generan confusión, de por qué están allí y qué significan, si es que significan algo, simplemente pretenden ser como la vida misma, supongo, aquí le diríamos ‘cosas que pasan, pasan qué cosas’ a lo venezolano rajado.
I should clarify that it is not a matter of the acting, I think the acting of Zoe Renee, Regina Hall and Amber Gray were fantastic but how the characters were developed within this environment seemed to me to lack something that in terms of generating connection with viewers I always like to highlight, that is personality through showing us who these women are as people apart from these within the situations they are going through. This script by Mariama Diallo I think presents too many things that it doesn't really intend to leave tied up for the viewer before finishing the cinematography and that's why I won't comment on the fact that it doesn't explain points that generate confusion, of why they are there and what they mean, if they mean anything, they just pretend to be like life itself, I guess, here we would say 'things that happen, what things happen' a la Venezuelan cracked.
Me gustó la fotografía porque colaboró de maravilla en hacer énfasis en esa sensación de incomodidad, intensidad y suspenso que se tratan de generar a partir de las situaciones de la cinematografía, juega de manera hermosa con lo oscuro, haciendo mucho uso de las sombras con iluminaciones atrayentes. La ambientación nos regala pequeños detalles también para hacernos entrar en esa percepción de encontrarse dentro de una universidad prestigiosa de antaño que, al menos en mi parecer, le añade a la parte del impacto considerando la historia de diferencias raciales en Estados Unidos. Además, se nota que es una película reciente por su calidad sobresaliente en términos de los efectos y equipo filmográfico, siempre será un placer para mí ver que las películas se ven cada día más hermosas porque el apartado estético es una de esas características que mayor emoción me dan.
I liked the photography because it collaborated wonderfully in emphasizing that feeling of discomfort, intensity and suspense that are trying to generate from the situations of the cinematography, it plays beautifully with the dark, making much use of the shadows with attractive lighting. The setting also gives us small details to make us enter into that perception of being inside a prestigious university of yesteryear that, at least in my opinion, adds to the impact considering the history of racial differences in the United States. In addition, you can tell that it is a recent film because of its outstanding quality in terms of effects and film equipment, it will always be a pleasure for me to see that movies look more beautiful every day because the aesthetic section is one of those features that give me more emotion.
¿La recomendaría? Por supuesto. Lo único a lo que le pondría los peros es que en realidad esperaba algo diferente de esta película, pero se encuentra a la mitad del realismo con las situaciones desagradables de racismo cotidiano de plantea y lo paranormal con la trama argumentativa del fantasma que le puso la vida triste a más de una en la cinematografía. Aquellos que vivan en las circunstancias de una persona de color dentro de una sociedad detestable donde el color de piel importa, es evidente que a diferencia de mí van a encontrar un mayor sentido de identificación con lo que aquí nos quieren plantear. Destaco la participación de la actriz Regina Hall, que es icónica por su interpretación de Brenda Meeks en las películas de Scary Movie y fue impactante verla ahora con la vibra totalmente diferente… al final terminé buscando unos videos, porque los recuerdos me hacen reír mucho, le daré puntos a esta película por eso.
Would you recommend it? Absolutely. The only thing I would put the buts to is that I actually expected something different from this film, but it meets halfway between realism with the unpleasant situations of everyday racism of poses and the paranormal with the ghost storyline that made life sad for more than one in filmmaking. Those who live in the circumstances of a person of color in a detestable society where skin color matters, it is evident that unlike me, they will find a greater sense of identification with what they want to present here. I highlight the participation of actress Regina Hall, who is iconic for her portrayal of Brenda Meeks in the Scary Movie films and it was shocking to see her now with a totally different vibe... in the end I ended up looking for some videos, because the memories make me laugh a lot, I will give points to this movie for that.
